I've written various blogs in different places over the years. Started a blog, then stopped, then did something blog-like on my own website, then stopped, then found a new blog-site, but stopped, and so on and so forth. Some was written in Danish and some in English. I have managed to collected all I wrote in those various places on this page in a somewhat decent chronological order. Almost six years of scattered thoughts...

2010 - april 17

Fra et hjørne af billedstormen

Design gennensyrer alt i vores tilværelse. Og undergrundens vilde stilarter indenfor den visuelle kunst assimileres mere og mere med den kommercielle virkelighed.
Der bliver skabt en obskøn mængde smukke, visuelle produkter nu om dage. Også når man blot vælge at se på hvad der ikke er en del af "overgrunden" (når vi nu er ved at snakke "undergrund").

Går man rundt i en by som Berlin - hvor man i forvejen konstant bombarderes af "street art" - og slår vejen forbi butikker som f.eks. Neurotitan og lignede steder med kunstbøger og tegneserier, så er den bedste strategi nok at sømme pengepungen fast til gulvbrædderne derhjemme inden man tager afsted.
Jeg kan ikke begynde, at gætte på hvor mange spændende forlag og kunstnere, der er derude. Det er overvældende. I sådan et omfang, at selv om mange tydelig inspireres af hinanden, så virker det som om der konstant er nye stilarter og idéer.
Kæmpeforlaget Taschen laver sine "Illustration Now"- og "Design Now"-bøger, der næsten har et nyt unikt udtryk på hver side i disse moppedrenge. Og det er vel næsten "mainstreamen". I f.eks. Neurotitan er der bunker og atter bunker af bøger, art prints m.v. fra små forlag i formentligt også små oplag. Jeg kan næsten ikke kapere det. Og egentligt er det nok også det, jeg ikke bør prøve på.
Ikke nok med at det ville være hundedyrt at skulle købe alt det, så er det også for meget at skulle forholde sig til. "Sensory overload". Jeg kan dårligt nok huske alt det, jeg allerede har set. Men ikke desto mindre vil jeg gerne forsøge at bringe et par gode fund videre til dem, der læser denne blog.

På min seneste Berlin-tur fik jeg endelig tjekket australske Shaun Tan ud. Han var flere steder i butikkerne med "graphic novels" og tegneserier. Selv om han vel kan siges at være en visuel kunstner, så er han nok ikke det man finder mest af i Neurotitan, da han sikkert ikke helt kan karakteriseres som "undergrund". Men han er vel heller ikke mainstream. I hvert fald ikke i Danmark. Ikke desto glider han ind på en fantasifuld bane midt imellem børne- og voksenlitteraturen, som er underfundig og poetisk. Og ikke mindst inspirerende.
I Berlin købte jeg "The Arrival", der er en surrealistisk, episk immigrant-historie fortalt udelukkende i tegninger uden ord, og jeg bestilte efterfølgende "Tales From Outer Suburbia", der med både ord og tegninger i meget varierede stilarter, der griber "novellen" an på en utraditionel måde igennem en række forskellige historier.
Men jeg kan jo sidde og skrive en masse ord om dem, og det vil stadig ikke være det samme som at se dem selv. Så derfor vil jeg i stedet blot opfordre til at finde dem og tjekke dem ud. Men jeg kan da sige, at synes man, at de dele man kan se online ser spændende ud, så bliver man ikke skuffet, når man sidder med bøgerne i hånden.


2010 - march 26

En poetisk opdagelsesrejse i lyd

Antydningens kunst? Kan I huske den? Det var noget, man brugte i forrige årtusinde. Sådan kan det i hvert fald ofte føles, når alt der rammer én dag ud og dag ind er store armbevægelser indstillet på maximum, mest og mere. Det er lige før, at man kan glemme det smukke i at gøre en indsats for at opleve noget.
Det blev publikum - blandt andet - mindet om i 'Rooms and In-Betweens", der blev opført i Det Jydske Musikkonservatoriums 'Falken'-sal i Musikhuset den 25. marts 2010. Bag denne lille times opdagelsesrejse stod Kati Linek, den tjekkisk-fødte musiker, der pt. studerer på konservatoriets elektronisk linie i Århus.

Publikum som prøvekaniner
Publikum var prøvekaniner for Lineks aftenseance, der bestod af en række segmenter af forskellige eksperimenter. Det var første gang det skulle spilles sådan, lod jeg mig fortælle. Men idéerne var tydelige og i langt de fleste tilfælde godt udført. Så det lover godt, når hun fremover skal bringe sine idéer til verden.
Aftenens set-up bestod bl.a. af en sofa, en gammeldags symaskine og en Madam Blå kaffekande med tilhørende kop. Flere af disse ting havde fået en mikrofon på sig og var koblet til en laptop. Når de blev taget i brug var det dog ikke lyden af dem, vi hørte, men andre lyde sat i gang af computeren på forskellig vis ud fra den lyd, som brugen af tingene genererede.
Man skulle høre efter
Indledningsvis benyttede Kati Linek sig dog af noget så simpelt som sin vejrtrækning. Der sad hun blot i sofaen med en mikrofon og havde øjenkontakt med publikum (hvor tit sker det egentligt ved koncerter, hvor musikerne er blændet af spotlys?). Og trak vejret. Hvilken fantastisk lyd... vejrtrækning. Vi har den med os hele tiden, hele livet. Oftest ganske svagt. Og det var også sådan, at Linek brugte den. Man skulle høre efter. Heldigvis var publikum lydhør og musestille. Man burde lytte mere til sig selv til dagligt. Der ligger helt sikkert nogle interessante oplevelser og venter.

Et segment bestod af videoprojektioner af en sneklædt skov på to høje lærreder. Elektroniske lydflader vævede sig sammen med Lineks sfæriske stemme, der fik lov til at boltre sig i et hav af rumklang. Her ramte Linek mindst lige så mange stemninger og billeder, som en mere gængs sangskriver får frem ved at bruge ord.

Simpelt og effektfuldt
Vi fik også fornøjelsen af Linek i step-sko med trådløse mikrofoner koblet til. De klikkede, ja. Men ved hjælp af forbindelsen til computeren fik vi også lyden af fugle, bølgeskvulp, kakofoniske klavertoner og andet.
Senere igen tog hun nærmest rollen som en ballerina (dog ikke i hvidt). Iført et stort skørt stivet af på gammeldags manér - med alskens metal-objekter gemt underneden - skabte hun harmoniske og disharmoniske klange med sine bevægelser. Først næsten uden bevægelse og kun med antydningen af lyd. Derefter tog bevægelser og lyden til. En simpel idé kunne man måske sige, men i al sin simpelthed havde det stor effekt. Nogle gange skal der ikke mere til. Ligesom med vejrtrækningen.

Ingen propfodring
Kati Linek arbejder meget med at bruge "reallyde" - optagelser ude fra den virkelige verden, som ikke er opstået af et instrument - og koblet med kroppen og laptoppen inviterede hun publikum på en tur med sin nysgerrighed. Et poetisk møde mellem koncert, performance og videokunst, hvor velkendte ting fik nyt liv. Det meste af vejen på en måde, der talte til publikums intelligens uden at være anmasende. Dejligt befriende. Vi blev ikke propfodret med noget, men måtte selv spidse ører. For nogle gange var lydene så lave, at de nærmeste sneg sig ind på én.

Det samlede indtryk af "Rooms and In-Betweens" var smukt, poetisk og søgende - og bestemt heller ikke uden humor. Skulle dette projekt udvikle sig og igen opføres er jeg ret overbevist om, at jeg tager rejsen en gang mere.

2010 - january 29

Avatar: Danser med smølfer i 3... 2...1... D

I slutningen af januar overgav jeg mig og tog i biffen og så "Avatar". Da jeg kom hjem satte jeg mig ned og startede på et blog-indlæg om den. Det blev allerhelvedes langt og jeg tænkte, at det vist skulle moderes, forkortes og skrives færdig inden jeg skulle udgive det. Men så langt nåede jeg ikke. Så what the hell... her er hele molevitten. En bredside, der er uforstående overfor de ukritiske anmeldere, og som ganske naturligt også kommer ud på et sidespor eller ti undervejs.

Der er var engang en Kevin Kostner, der lavede en film, der hed "Danser med ulve" (selv om det mest var med indianere). Senere tog Tom Cruise østens lærdom til sig i "The Last Samurai", som anmelderne med et glimt i øjet - på grund af parallellerne med førstnævnte - kaldte "Danser med samuraier". Og nu har vi fået samme historie igen fra James Camerons hånd og en passende titel ville nok være "Danser med blå rumindianere" - eller måske "Danser med smølfer", hvis vi skal gøre den lidt mere fræk og mundret.
Og ja, jeg tog ind og så den til trods for mit forbehold overfor billetprisen, der med diverse tillæg og påtvunge 3D-briller (selv om jeg havde et par tilovers fra "Up"), ville blive en bekostelig affære. Dog viste det sig, at en god ven gav billetten som tak for en tjeneste, så...

Wow, 3D!
Jeg kunne måske læne mig tilbage her og sige, at jeg var godt underholdt. Og lad det være ved det. Men jo mere jeg tænker over det, så må jeg sætte spørgsmål ved det. Selv om det betyder, at nok så mange vil være rystende uenige.

Ja, filmen har en fremragende 3D effekt. Der sker mange ting. Der er drøn på. Det er imponerende lavet (givetvis en stor teknisk bedrift - for hvilket den nok også fortjener en Oscar for bedste effekter). Filmen er forførende med sin drømmeverden (har man læst sin del af cyberpunk-litteratur fra 80'erne og 90'erne eller set film inspireret af den, så burde en del advarselslamper blinke her).

Lille blå Sambo
Handlingen kan noteres ned på en post-it note: "Blå rumindianere i ét med naturen siger uh-uh og slår på tromme. Og nå ja, den hvide mand er en skiderik."

(Det gør det så hellere ikke bedre, at vi får leveret et flere timer langt soundtrack, der lyder som om det var lavet af Enya med en bongotromme. Det er mere end jeg kan klare.)

En økofabel med et nobelt nok budskab, der dog er skåret helt ud i pap: Værd ét med naturen. Respektér den. Dette kolliderer så helt og aldeles med de mere subliminale budskaber, der ligger i filmen, som jeg kommer ind på til sidst her.

Når man tænker på, at dette er en 3D-film, så er den forbavsende én-dimensionel.
Cameron har tydeligvis ville tilføre nogle deltaljer for at gøre planeten Pandoras flora og fauna unik, men når han portrætterer Na'vierne - rumindianerne - er det med en pensel, der er omtrent så nuanceret, som når man synger "Jeg har set en rigtig negermand" eller fortæller "Lille sorte sambo" i 2010. Det er ugh-ugh og bum-bummelum. Det er ren tegnefilm. Cameron er så sandelig ingen Tolkien, hvis man ser på detaljegraden af hans selvopfundne samfund. Det samme kan man sige om George Lucas' prequel-trilogi. Ugh-ugh og bum-bummelum.

Voksne børn hooked på Othello-lagkage
Er hele verden gået i barndom? Er vi kommet til et punkt, hvor vi kun orker at tage stilling til film lavet til børn? Ja, come on, et voksent menneske må da kunne forventes at kunne reflektere over noget, der er en kende mere nuanceret? Er vi efterhånden så mentalt kastrerede af medierne og vores samfund, at vi ikke kan - eller vil - kapere mere?

"Avatar" er en Othello-lagkage. "Avatar" er bling, som hip-hopperne kalder det. Flot, men med masser af tomme kalorier. Et hurtigt kick, men ikke noget, man kan bruge til noget. Man kan gætte sig til det hele, så der er ingen overraskelser undervejs.

Den amerikanske komiker talte i sin tid bl.a. om USA's eksport af sin kulturelle produkter til resten af verden. Hvoraf det meste var dumt og dårligt. Han tog USA's rolle på sig og opsummerede det med ordene:

"Instead of us having to grow, we'll bring you to our level."

Action er lig med spænding?
Filmen kan og bliver forsvaret med ord i stil med: "Jamen, det er en popcornsfilm. Det er action. Vi kan ikke forvente mere".
Jo, vi kan. Skal actionfilm ikke være spændende? Skal vi ikke sidde helt ude på kanten af sædet? Sådan er det nok med computerskabte film. Det bliver jo aldrig rigtigt helt spændende, vel? For der er ikke noget på spil. Helten skal jo nok klare det. Jeg er aldrig i tvivl. Det er i øvrigt det samme problem, som "Pirates Of The Caribbean"-filmene i større og større grad fik, som serien skred frem.
I en almindelig film, så ved jeg måske godt inderst inde, at han nok skal klare det. Men jeg kan se på skærmen, at det er et menneske af kød og blod, der rent faktisk udfører det, der sker. Det får mig ud på kanten af sædet (og her mener jeg heller ikke tilfælde, hvor man med computeren snyder sig til vilde stunts).

Så giv mig hellere en rigtig levende stuntmand, der hænger i en tagrend med 4 brækkede fingre, og film ham oppefra. Prøv at lave den i 3D. Så er jeg med!

Og hvis jeg skal sætte det endnu mere på spidsen: Det gibber mere i mig, når jeg ser et af Stanley Kubricks billeder fra "The Shining". Kameraet rør sig ikke ud af flækken. Det gør intet eller ingen i billedet næsten heller ikke. Men der sidder Jack Nicholson og ser på os. Det er spændende - og jeg kan mærke det. Jamen, hvad er det, der sker der?

"It's called acting!"

Bedre end livet i sig selv
Der blev brugt masser af spalteplads på "Avatar", da den kom. Også om folk, der fik depressioner, fordi de savnede den drømmeverden, de havde oplevet på lærredet. Come on!

Vi må sgu' passe på at vi ikke luller os ind i en drømmeverden, hvor vi ikke vil ud fra igen. Det er jo god gammeldags virkelighedsflugt. Og efterhånden af en sådan overbevisende slags, at vores sanser går med hele vejen. Hånd i hånd med et ønske om ikke at skulle tage stilling til virkeligheden. Det lyder som scenariet til indtil flere science fiction-film (det jeg mente med cyberpunk-referencen tidligere). Men vi er der såmænd allerede.
World of Warcraft er et glimrende eksempel. Og kom ikke og sig, at der ikke er mange af brugerne, der er helt opslugt og hellere vil være der - end her.

Anyways, "Avatar" bruger så meget computergrafik på at blive realistisk, at paradoksalt nok får hele virkelighedsfornemmelsen en ubetydelig birolle. Havde hele filmen været lavet i 100% computergrafik uden rigtig skuespillere, så ville jeg have accepteret præmissen og kunne leve mig mere ind i historien. Der er flere "virkelige" oplevelser at hente i film som "Wall-E" og især "Up".

Meget mere blod, tak!
Men tilbage til filmen. Der er lige en detalje mere, der er en kritisk kommentar værd - hvilket hykleri altid fortjener.

Sigourney Weaver finder Ripley frem igen, men lander i en anden af hendes tidligere film - "Gorillaer i disen". He-he! Men i USA har der været mest mest opmærksomhed på hendes karakters rygning og druk i filmen (hvilket egentligt er 3 korte rygescener og et enkelt shotglas af ukendt fluidum, så vidt jeg husker). Heftig kritik, der frister selv en ikke-ryger til at spørge: "Hvad er der galt med smøger på film?". I håbet om at få svaret: "Det er usundt og giver folk det indtryk, at rygning er cool".
Herefter indlægges en lille kunstpause for dramatisk effekt for derefter at svare tilbage med hævet stemme:
"Hvad så med det uendelige forråd af automatvåben, det ene større end det andet, der mejer folk nede flere steder i filmen?!?! Hvilket indtryk giver det?!"
Og ja, vel at mærke tommetyk vold uden at man næsten ser en dråbe blod. Det er der tilsyneladende ikke noget galt i?

Må vi få lidt mere - nej, meget mere - blod på skærmen, når folk bliver skudt i smadder, tak! Ikke for at svælge i død og ødelæggelse, men for at give det rette indtryk af effekten af det, der foregår på skærmen.

Og så er der vist brug tid og ord nok på den sag. :-)

Ja, nu prøver jeg også lige at opsummere "top 20" over hvad jeg synes er den bedste musik fra de sidste 10 år. Og nej, der er ingen The Strokes, The White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand eller Interpol, men en masse andet godt. Synes jeg. :-)

Lucky Dragons har om nogen været meget produktiv. Jeg valgte "Dark Falcon", men kunne egentligt lige så godt have valgt "A Sewing Circle" eller "Widows".
M.h.t. Scout Niblett var jeg på nippet til at putte "Kidnapped By Neptune" på i stedet, men faldt alligevel mest for debutens charme. Ligeledes med Vincent Gallo valgte jeg hans soundtrack cd, men var tæt på at vælge hans mere straight sangbaserede album "When", der også er fantastisk.
Til min overraskelse, så har Björk ikke udgivet et album i 10 år, der er værdigt til at komme på listen. Faktisk i 13 år, hvis vi skal være helt præcise.

Det bedste i 2009

Ja-ja, jeg ved det godt. Traditionen tro og alt det der. Årets bedste det ene og det andet. Og ja, jeg gør forsøget igen i år. Og ganske naturligt bliver det ikke en liste over årets bedste udgivelser ifølge mine smagsløg, men de udgivelser, jeg fortærede og synes bedst om i løbet af året. Sagt med andre ord: Der er så sandelig ting og sager imellem, som ikke er udgivet i 2009. Her er så den lidt omfattende liste - uden nogen form for rangorden eller alfabetisk orden.


Musik


Prinzenallee: Don't Let Nerds Take Over Your Life
Dette album udgivet faktisk først i skrivende stund, men jeg har haft mulighed for at smuglytte i et lille stykke tid. Og det har jeg gjort meget. Måske kan jeg endda få det med som favoritalbum igen næste år, når den egentligt ikke er helt ude endnu, he-he. Prinzenallee er en duo bestående af den amerikanske rapper Bleubird (der i sin tid genoplivede min interesse for rap) og den tyske musiker Jayrope. Albummet er dejligt løst og legesygt, men har samtidig en seriøs tone. Det er lige sådan, jeg vil have det. Udgivelsen fortjener al mulig opmærksomhed.

Diverse Kunstnere: The Sound Of Wonder! Rare Electronic Pop from the Lollywood Vaults 1973-1980.
Fortryllende filmmusik fra Pakistan. Fra en tid hvor elektroniske instrumenter begyndte at vinde indpas og er med til at give ekstra krydderi til de mere traditionelle elementer. Masser af analog varme og læssevis af legesyge.
Udgivet af Finders Keepers Records, der har for vane at grave efter denne slags gamle, sjove sager.

Blind Blake & The Royal Victoria Calypsos - Bahamian Songs
Det er gennemført "old school", det er eksotisk og det er fyldt med sjæl, glæde og melankoli - alt sammen på én gang.

Lokai: Transition
Igennem flere år har bandet Radian haft sin egen kliniske og knitrende stil. I år er de stukket af fra den med deres seneste album og er ikke sluppet helt heldigt fra det. Heldigvis er der flere sideprojekter i Radians omkreds, der holder lidt fast i den oprindelige stil og tilfører nyt. Lokai er et af dem og "Transition" er et fornemt møde mellem elektronikken og det akustiske, der er tyk af stemning, men samtidig med masser af luft i lydbilledet.

Durian Brothers - Clubs EP
En EP jeg faldt over, da jeg slog vejen forbi Marriage Records' hjemmeside. Et af mine favoritlabels, som jeg med jævne mellemrum tjekker for nyt. Et besøg på bandets hjemmeside fik hurtigt nysgerrigheden pirret med repetitive, men foranderlige "tribal"-rytmer og elektronik. Just up my alley.

Solomon Ilori And His Afro-Drum Ensemble - Igbesi Aiye / Gbogbo Omo Ibile
Ved et LJUD-arrangement på Musikcaféen i Århus dj'ede LJUD-gutterne med et nummer fra denne skive. Måtte simpelthen høre hvad det var. Afro-rytmer og simple, tunge blæsere i repetitive, sjælfulde mønstre. Rent guf.

The Units - History Of The Units
The Units slog deres folder på San Fransiscos musik- og kunstscene i 70'erne og 80'erne. De var imod brugen af guitarer og gik i stedet synth-vejen med deres new wave- og kraut-agtige pop-punk. Nogen fik i 2009 den gode idé at samle en masse af deres - givetvis generelt oversete - numre på en opsamlings-cd. Det meste har en rå analog lo-fi lyd, men det bidrager bare til stemningen. Der er både rene ørehængere og instrumentale elektronik-forløb her. Gode sager.

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou - The Vodoun Effect - 1972-1975 - Funk & Sato from Benin's Obscure Labels
Der er pladeselskaber derude, der har fundet ud af, at interessen er stigende for gamle sager fra Afrika. Bl.a. er der jo kommet mange plader med etiopisk musik, som fik ekstra eksponering igennem Jim Jarmusch's film "Broken Flowers". Denne herlige dobbelt-LP (eller cd, hvis man er til det) samler en masse rare og hamrende melodiske sager fra Benin. Siiindsygt fede rytmer på mange af numrene. Ja, og blæsere, og guitar og, og, og...

R.L. Burnside: First Recordings
R.L. Burnside fik vist et comeback i 90'erne med en sumpet blues for fuld skrue med band. Det jeg hørte sagde mig ikke rigtigt noget. Dette album indeholder nogle meget gamle optagelser - ja, "de første" - hvor det blot er R.L. med en akustisk guitar. Og det er simpelthen fortryllende og lige som jeg vil have det. Old school blues uden dikkedarer og lange soloer.

Mississippi Fred McDowell & Johnny Woods: Mama Says I'm Crazy
Endnu en old school blues plade. Igen "back to basics". Eller rettere sagt: det er optagelser fra dengang, hvor det var sådan man gjorde det. Guitar, mundharmonika og sang. Medrivende blues grooves, som man sjældent hører dem.

Tenniscoats: Temporacha
Japanske Tenniscoats lavede en split-release med skotske The Pastels og ramte den mindre interessante midterrabat i år. Men de udgav også albummet "Temporacha" i år, hvor de optog deres små underlige, eksperimenterende popsange rundt på forskellige lokationer udenfor. Altså, en slags "field recordings". Lidt anderledes end og knapt så let tilgængeligt som deres to foregående studiealbums, som helt fortryllede mig sidste år, men ikke desto mindre stadig stemningsfuldt, underfundigt og med masser af gå på opdagelse i.

Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal / Isles (7"-single)
Nok et af de mest hypede "indiebands" i 2008. Hype får ofte mig til at stå af allerede, når jeg læser den. Ergo: inden jeg får lyttet. I år fik jeg så øre for et par af deres sange. Hele albummet holder ikke helt samme niveau, synes jeg. Men det lidt over to minutter lange nummer "White Winter Hymnal" er en pop-genistreg af rang. Én som jeg, snob, så havde tilgode til i år.

Broadcast & The Focus Group: Investigate Witch Cults Of The Radio Age
Dette var et album, jeg startede med at læse mig til i musikmagasinet The Wire, et stykke tid før det udkom. Broadcast kender jeg godt fra tidligere med deres sfæriske retro-pop, men denne gang ville de prøve noget nyt. Man fornemmer noget klart engelsk med tråde til Stonehenge og BBC's Radiophonic Workshop (bl.a. folkene bag Doctor Who-temaet) i materialet, men ellers vil jeg blot sige, at pladens titel i sig selv på fornemmeste vis opsummerer stemningen.

Lucky Dragons: Rara Speaks
Lucky Dragons har været utroligt produktive de seneste par år. I 2009 er det blevet til et album, et par 7"-singler og denne opsamling af svært tilgængelige numre og nye ting. Der er en, der har kaldt det "hypnotic tribal pop". Måske meget godt rart - lige bortset fra, at det nok ikke kan kaldes pop. Der er meget sjældent vokal på. Men ikke desto mindre sætter de små, loopede melodier sig i øret og hjertet. Lucky Dragons bliver ved med at udforske deres helt egen og meget genkendelige stil og det er spændende at følge med i denne smukke rejse. Deres "Open Power" album fra i år er bestemt også værd at tjekke ud (evt. her).

The Doors: Morrison Hotel
En meget kendt klassiker. Købte The Doors' samlede værker i remasterede genudgivelser i år og kom endelig videre end "The Best Of". Det er naturligvis svært at vælge ét album ud, når der er flere af dem, der virkelig holder (og andre, der ikke helt gør). Der er plader, som alene ved ét eller to numres blotte tilstedeværelse, næsten kan blive essentielle. "Morrison Hotel" leverede dog "Peace Frog", som jeg ikke kendte fra opsamlinger, radio, tv, Oliver Stone-film osv. Fantastisk nummer. Genudgivelserne rummer dog en del bonusnumre med snak fra studiet, forkerte opstarter og ikke-ret-alternative udgaver, som jeg har svært ved at se hvad nogen som helst kan bruge til noget.

Det løse
Derudover har årets soundtrack også bestået af genudgivet 90'er-punk fra Dog Faced Hermans ("Hum Of Life"), sang-plus-tromme fra George Coleman som "Bongo Joe" og guld fra flere opsamlinger med meget gamle optagelser fra hele verden fra Mississippi Records. Derudover diverse udgivelser med Mount Eerie (Phil Elverum), Animal Collectives "Merriweather Post Pavillion" (der blev hypet rigeligt, men kun mønstrede enkelte rigtigt gode numre på albummet), flere udgivelser med MF Doom (hvor "Born Like This" der udkom i år gjorde det godt, men ikke peakede helt her), Tortoises "Beacons of Ancestorship" (der havde gode idéer og nye toner, men samtidig virkede som om bandet efterhånden har udspillet sig selv) og Bill Callahan (Smog) med "Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle".

Læsestof i 2009
Jeg er ikke typen, der sluger stakkevis af bøger. Det er få, der ryger ned om året. I år blev det dog bl.a. Kurt Vonneguts "Galapagos", som var underholdende og morsom på sin egen fordrejede vonnegutske facon. Den mand var genial, men fremfor alt "a decent human being" af den slags, det er blevet sværere og sværere at få øje på efterhånden.
2009 blev også året, hvor jeg endelig fik fat i Scott McClouds "Understanding Comics" fra 1993 og jeg forstår godt, hvorfor den er blevet rost så meget. Simpelthen fremragende.
Læste mange numre af The Wire, fordi jeg nu engang er abonnement. Og det kan jeg også anbefale andre.

Skulle man så til at lave en liste over den bedste musik udgivet fra 2000-2009? Vi får se.


2009 - december 17

Ud med wham og rensdyr - ind med jive, garage og bison!

Jeg kan godt lide at finde frem til lidt anderledes julenumre af den slags, der ikke bliver spillet i radioen og til alle fester. I år og sidste år har jeg fundet frem til dem her.



Diverse kunstnere: I'm Gonna Lasso Santa Claus
Imponerende alsidig opsamling med gamle julenumre fra 1920'erne til 1950'erne. Der er både nye (gamle) vinkler på dem man kender og også helt originale numre. Og så er der en fantastisk julefortælling på 'jive'.

Wild Billy Childish & The Musicians Of The British Empire: Christmas 1979
Bare fordi det er jul behøver man ikke læne sig tilbage og slappe af. Der kan godt rockes igennem. Det sørger Wild Billy Childish for på fornemmeste vis i sin "vanlige" garagerock stil. "Dear Santa Claus" er klart en af favoritterne hos undertegnede.

Shonen Knife: Space Christmas (7" single)
Mest en lille kuriøsitet, jeg faldt over på nettet. Kendte godt til bandet i forvejen, som noget kitschet 80'er/90'er japansk "tøserock". Denne lille single med numrene "Space Christmas" og "Bear Up Bison" måtte jeg bare tjekke ud. Bestemt noget kikset, men netop derfor skuffede den ikke, he-he.

Noget om kreativ frihed og trange kår

Inden jeg går lidt mere i dybden med de film, jeg nævnte i forrige indlæg, så vil jeg lige kort nævne de to film, jeg så på den sidste dag på Århus Filmfestival (foruden det afsluttende kortfilmsprogram). Det var "Japan: A Story of Love and Hate" og "Rip: A Remix Manifesto". Begge to fremragende på hver deres måde. Den japanske film har jeg ikke lige fundet en trailer til, men faktisk ligger hele filmen på YouTube (se længere nede i indlægget her). Det er naturligvis ikke det samme som at sidde i biografmørket og lade sig suge ind i disse personers hverdag. Der er mere information om filmen på instruktøren Sean McAllisters hjemmeside her. "Rip"-filmen, der handler om en mere moderne og kreativ tilgang til begrebet copyright, findes der ganske naturligt en del af på nettet. Blandt andet nedenstående trailer. Disse to film kunne jeg også godt tænke mig at skrive lidt mere om her inden alt for længe. Så nu er der fem film, der skal - og fortjener - noget ekstra fokus, hvilket jeg vil forsøge at give dem her.

2009 - november 14

Tre øjenåbnere til to øjne

I disse dage er der dokumentar- og kortfilmsfestival i Århus, hvor man ganske gratis kan gå ind og se en lang række fremragende film. I de seneste to dage har jeg haft fornøjelsen af at se tre helt fantastiske dokumentarer, der virkelig sætter spor langt, langt inde i hjernebarken længe efter - for ikke at sige: også i hjertet, naturligvis. Jeg bliver simpelthen nødt til at skrive om dem her, når jeg får et ledigt øjeblik. Indtil da er her trailere for de tre film - som alle burde se og tage stilling til på den ene eller anden måde.

2009 - november 7

Oldies: eksotiske rytmer i røg og hamp

Når jeg lytter til musik er jeg rimeligt meget over det hele - både genre- og tidsmæssigt og geografisk. Jeg har en forkærlighed for det virkeligt gamle en-mands-blues af den slags, der virkelig har "patina". Men paletten er blevet udvidet en del de senere år. Selv om megen musik igennem tiderne har været lavet med et kommercielt formål, så lyder det sgu' alligevel som om det er lavet med noget sjæl meget af det. Et eller andet sted. I hvert fald i sammenligning med hvad vi bliver overdænget med nu om stunder.


For nylig købte jeg opsamlings-cd'en "The Ultimate 30s and 40s Reefer Songs". De kan nok ikke siges, at være synderligt kommercielle idet numrene formentligt har været ildeset på grund af deres omdrejningspunkt: marijuana. Måske dog mest senere i efterkrigstiden. Men som de fleste jo sikkert allerede ved, så er der jo kommet gevaldigt meget god musik til verden hånd i hånd med en gang fniseurt. Denne skive er ingen undtagelse. Og der er såmænd flere af de store gamle med som f.eks. Fats Waller, Ella Fitzgerald og Cab Calloway.


En anden gang "old school" musik jeg lige vil fremhæve er Blind Blake And The Royal Victora Hotel Calypsos (ikke at forveksle med bluesmusikeren Blind Blake) og cd'en "Bahamian Songs". Optagelserne er lavet i de tidlige 1950'ere. Blind Blake var en ganske produktiv herre og nåede også at få en del anerkendelse - af bl.a. Louis Armstrong og Duke Ellington. Senere igen lod Beach Boys sig inspirere af ham. På sine ældre dage - i starten af 1980'erne - var han ansat af Bahamas' turistministerium til at spille i lufthavnen for at byde rejsende velkommen. Typisk, kunne man sige, men det ændrer ikke ved, at cd'en indeholder 28 fantastiske numre, der formår at svinge mellem varm eksotisk løssluppenhed og snigende melankoli indenfor samme takt.
Ja, hermed to gange "oldies" anbefalet.
Du kan lytte til hamptågerne hos Amazon eller Norman Records. Hos sidstnævnte kan man også købe "Bahamian Songs". Den findes også hos Honest Jons, hvor man kan lytte. Første nummer, "Love, Love Alone", synes jeg i al beskedenhed er fantastisk.


2009 - november 6

Når man får rodet sig ud i noget



Der har været noget stille omkring mit label SOPA det seneste års tid. Ikke så meget ny musik at udgive, ej heller koncertarrangementer og så var der en flytning og et nyt job, der har taget noget af fokus i starten af året. Men nu sker der endelig noget igen. To aftener i november er der "label nights" i Århus og Aalborg henholdsvis den 20. og 21.

Kunstnerne
Efter en del tilløb er det endelig lykkedes at få Marzipan Marzipan herop igen. Det er efterhånden noget tid siden. Sammen med hende kommer duoen Sister Chain & Brother John, som jeg faktisk ikke selv har set live, men kun mødt dem personligt. De har dog lavet en fed LP, som jeg bl.a. sælger i SOPA-shoppen og live-klippene online tegner ganske godt. Århus-aftenen bliver fyldt godt ud idet vi har to af de lokale SOPA acts med: A.K. Hansn & The Five Orange Pips (han skifter navn på backingbandet til hver koncert og hugger det fra en af de mange Sherlock Holmes-historier. Der er mange af dem og de er alle seje bandnavne, he-he. Bare tjek) og så Agata & Me. I Aalborg er det blot de to berlinske acts, der spiller. Men begge aftener er der også dj's på programmet. Forunden undertegnede - under navnet Capt. Daydream - er der Zelda Panda (DJ-aliaset for Marzipan Marzipan). Panda har det med at vælge en del forundelige numre, når hun dj'er, så det glæder jeg mig til.

Alt det der ligger bag
Indtil det hele går løs, så er det bare hårdt arbejde og en kamp om at bevare overblikket og ikke glemme noget. Jeg kunne selvfølgelig have valgt at holde det på et almindeligt spillested (hvis de vil lukke os ind), men har valgt at prøve kræfter med Århus Kunstakademi i Vestergade (ikke Jydsk Kunstakademi i Mejlgade). Så har vi lidt mere spillerum med selve oplevelsen, vi gerne skulle skabe. Men det resulterer også i meget mere arbejde. Foruden hele den tekniske opsætning (lydanlæg, visuals og lys) skal der indhentes tilladelser fra politiet, skrives ansøgning om støtte fra kommunen, laves budget (og senere regnskab), markedsføring (medier, web og i bybilledet), planlægges udsmykning, forberedes SOPA-shop, planlægges logistik (jeg får sikkert drønet meget på kryds og tværs af byen i min lille Kia den uge), sørges for forplejning, bar, overnatning og... så... videre. Alene den liste af ting kan midt i processen få mig selv til at tænke på hvorfor pokker jeg roder mig ud i disse projekter. Alle pengene går til musikken og jeg selv får ikke anden en fornøjelsen og arbejdet ud af det. Og indtil aftenen er ovre kan jeg så gå og være nervøs over om der kommer nok mennesker, så det kan løbe ordentligt rundt. Heldigvis er der søde mennesker, der hjælper med kontakter og noget af det praktiske på selve aftenen. Og det bliver helt sikkert rigtig fedt og superhyggeligt. Og det bliver alt sammen i godt selskab både fra Århus og Berlin - så meget er jeg sikker på. Ja, hvorfor gør jeg det? Det må være derfor. Skabe nogle gode oplevelser sammen med andre mennesker. Hvis man skal være helt højtragende kan man vel sige, at på et helt fundamentalt plan, så er det vel en stor del af det, som livet handler om?
Nå, skal jeg lige runde af med lidt fakta om aftenerne?

2009 - september 11

Det knitrer, skurrer og prikker



Jeg kunne godt tænke mig at hive nogle interessante albums frem i bloggen. Ikke nødvendigvis nye udgivelser. Faktisk gerne nogle favoritter fra gemmerne. Kort sagt, et par ord om hvad der roterer i afspilleren på det givne tidspunkt.

Startede dagen i dag i morgentrafikken med Radian's "Juxtaposition" i bilstereoen. Efterhånden et stykke tid siden, at jeg havde hørt albummet.
Beats spillet på akustiske trommer med whiskers på minimalistisk vis, men stadig med en hvirvlende, prikkende fornemmelse af et hav af små detaljer. Dette kombineret med elektroniske klange og lyde, der lyder som er de hentet fra en løs elektrisk forbindelse og manipuleret ind i denne symbiose. Det er Radian's stil og kendetegn - som de har udviklet over flere albums på fornemmeste vis.

2009 - august 27 / september 9

Uindlæg



I anledningen af at et indlæg her blev slettet, fordi jeg ikke ville have det her alligevel, er det vel nok på sin plads at bringe et billede af Winston Smith fra "1984" i færd med at skabe endnu en uperson - et menneske der ikke længere eksisterer i vores fælles bevidsthed og arkiver. Ergo må dette være et uindlæg.

2009 - august 9

Et forsøg med det ubeskrivelige Berlin



Jeg faldt forleden i en antikvarboghandel over bogen "Billedernes logik" af den tyske filminstruktør Wim Wenders. I den finder man blandt andet hans første udkast til hans måske mest berømte film: "Himlen over Berlin". Dette fragmentariske flow-of-the-mind stykke tekst har den meget sigende titel "Første beskrivelse af en temmelig ubeskrivelig film".
Han ville lave en film om Berlin og Tyskland, men på en helt speciel måde. Man kan måske mere sige, at selv om filmen besidder en del ord - og er ret poetisk på mange måder - så synes jeg lige så meget, at den er en stemning. Et levende maleri der skaber en helt unik stemning, der sidder i kroppen længe efter - hvis ikke for evigt. David Lynch gør noget af det samme - dog med sin helt egen type stemning.

Omtrent samtidigt med dette nye bogkøb er jeg kommet hjem fra endnu en tur til Berlin (vist den 10. tur siden 2004). Jeg er naturligvis vendt tilbage til byen igen og igen, fordi jeg synes den er speciel (foruden geografisk tilgængelig). Jeg har prøvet at sætte ord på det. Med større og mindre held. Blandt andet på mine første ture i 2004 og 2005 (kig evt. forbi min hjemmeside).
Der var derfor lidt trøst at finde i Wenders' bog, hvor han også havde bøvl med at sætte ord på Berlin. Selv som tysker, der har været i Berlin mange gange.

I sit forsøg for at indkredse essensen af Berlin citerer han fra en udstilling, "Mythos Berlin, Concepte". Et godt valg. Ordene rammer godt. Og ja, de er skrevet før murens fald, men byens historie og en del af den mentalitet, der følger med den, hænger stadig ved, synes jeg. Selv om byen er en helt, helt anden nu, så synes jeg stadig, at ordene er rammende i et forsøg på at nå ind til essensen.
Wenders skriver:

Berlin er et "historisk sted for sandheden."
Ingen anden by er så meget et sind-billede,
så meget et OVERLEVELSESSTED,
så typisk for vores århundrede,
Berlin er så splittet som vores verden,
som vores tid,
som mænd og kvinder,
som unge og fattige,
som alle vores erfaringer.
Berlin er "kaput", siger mange.
Jeg siger: Berlin er mere virkelig end alle de andre byer.
Netop: et STED, mere end en STAD.
"... at leve i denne den udelte sandheds by, at omgås fremtidens og fortidens usynlige skikkelser..."

Wenders valgte titlen "Himlen over Berlin", fordi himlen var det eneste, som de to dele byen dengang bestod af (og egentligt stadig består af) havde til fælles. Om sine ambitioner med filmen skriver han tidligere i samme tekst, at den skal være...

En film, der kunne give en anelse om byens historie siden krigsafslutningen. En film, hvor der måske kunne dukke noget op og komme til syne, noget som jeg savner så meget i mange film, der udspiller sig dér, og som dog synes at ligge meget håndgribeligt for ens øjne, når man kommer til denne by: en fornemmelse, ja, men også noget i luften, og under fødderne, og i ansigterne: netop det, der så afgørende adskiller livet i denne by fra livet i andre byer.

Wenders ramte i hvert fald noget specielt med sin film. En personlig fortolkning, ja, men ikke mindst fangede han den blanding af gammel tragedie og nyt håb, der udgør hvad det end er, man indånder, når man går på opdagelse i Berlin.

Jeg har måske nok et romantisk forhold til byen. Jeg bor der ikke selv og oplever de svære kår, der kan være for mange der. Men som dansker er det nok fremfor alt den form for frihed man møder, der er mest rammende. En type frihed, som man ikke kan undgå at lægge mærke til, når man kommer fra et samfund, hvor mange på højeste politiske sted har seriøse planer for de steder i landet, som majoriteten ikke forstår. Planer der indbefatter et så uhyggeligt ord som "normalisering" (det mest åbentlyse eksempel værende Christiania).

På min seneste tur befandt jeg mig blandt andet på Skalitzerstrasse i bydelen Kreuzberg, hvor byens togbane løber på en bro på langs med - imellem - bilernes kørebaner. De mange buske og træer ved siden af og under denne trafikåre var i glimt lettere jungleagtig. Og lige dér i det øjeblik skulle der ikke mere til at give mig en varm følelse inden i.
Måske er det sådan at komme fra et lille land, hvor hver en hektar er enten beboelse eller landbrugsjord og hvor det hele for det meste er velfriseret?

Det var lidt tanker herfra om Berlin ovenpå den seneste tur og en læsning af Wim Wenders ord om byen.

Bonus track:
Bogen er udgået fra det danske forlag, men ser ud til at være let nok at finde på engelsk ("The Logic of Images"). Jeg vil samtidig gerne slå et slag for det helt fortryllende soundtrack til filmen, der foruden dele af dens poetiske ord rummer masser af smuk kor- og strygermusik af en type, jeg i hvert fald sjældent støder på.



2009 - july 13

Noget om besættelse


Så fik jeg endelig set dokumentaren "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters". En ganske fortræffelig film om to mænd, der kæmper om titlen som verdens bedste i at spille det gamle arkadespil Donkey Kong. Det lyder umiddelbart meget nørdet. Det er det også. Men filmen er skruet perfekt sammen, så den er spændende, tankevækkende og ofte også ret som morsom (it's funny because it's true!). Man behøver ikke være nørd for at nyde den, for den handler dybest set om helt basale ting, som vi formentligt alle kan nikke genkendende til på forskellig vis.

Billy Mitchell satte rekorden i Donkey Kong tilbage i 1982 og de følgende 20 år blev den ikke slået. Steve Wiebe er en almindelig familiefar, der blev fyret fra Boeing og pludselig havde meget tid til at forfølge det at være nummer ét i et eller andet. Det blev Donkey Kong.

De to mænd er meget forskellige. Billy har levet som Kong-stjerne i arkadekredse - og nydt det - siden rekorden og har nu sin egen business, hvor han sælger "hot chicken wing sauce". I al den tid har han egentligt ikke skulle røre en finger for at blive på førstepladsen. Men pludselig så dukker familiefaren Steve op. Steve får i løbet af filmen job som lærer, men fortsætter mod sin Donkey-drøm. Men det er hårdt at komme ind som outsider i den meget lukkede arkadeverden, hvor alle kender hinanden og Billy Mitchell er den indiskutable stjerneatlet. Intriger, besættelse og paranoia finder hurtigt vej ind i hverdagen.
Billy har identificeret sig så meget med stjernerollen, at han har tabt sig selv helt i den og virker infantil i sine handlinger og han er tydeligvis en dårlig taber, der ikke ved helt hvordan han skal tackle den nye trussel. Steve udfordrer samtidig rollen som god familiefar i sin jagt på den højeste highscore. Når muligheden for at komme i Guiness Rekordbog dukker op senere i filmen bliver det alvor.

Filmen er en rigtig "underdog story", men samtidig også et fint studie i besættelse. Hvor meget må besættelsen fylde? Og hvorfor skal man absolut være nummer ét i et eller andet (næsten lige meget hvad det er) for enhver pris? Og samtidig: hvor godt er det at hvile på fortidens bedrifter og gro fast i den rolle man har i forbindelse med dem?

Som altid skal man høre sandheden fra børnene. I filmen spørger Steves lille datter hvad der er så vigtigt ved Donkey Kong og tilføjer meget klogt, at der er mennesker, der får ødelagt deres liv i deres forsøg på at komme i Guiness Rekordbog. Replikken var fantastisk og fik mig til at grine højt.

Som europæer kan man også sidde og "nyde" filmen som endnu et farverigt eksempel på det amerikanske samfund og hvordan det gennem vores briller kan være både fordrejet og helt ude af proportioner. Underholdende er det i hvert fald. Og bare det er at se superstar Billy Mitchell føre sig frem med "perfekt" hår og skæg med hænderne fast i siderne som en stolt rumpilot er simpelthen priceless.

Hvor underligt oplægget end måtte lyde, så er det en utroligt underholdende film, der er skruet godt sammen. Man overgiver sig til præmissen og følger med i spænding, selv om man godt ved, at det er endnu en "virkelighed", der er sat i scene med de klassiske filmiske virkemidler. Det virker. Man er underholdt og samtidig sidder man efter filmen også med en masse stof til eftertanke.

2009 - july 8

Spotlight #1: Fossils

Så tager jeg - som tidligere skrevet - hul på en serie korte præsentationer af bands og musikere, jeg synes er spændende.



For et par år siden var jeg en af de få heldige, der havde fornøjelsen af at opleve den amerikanske bas- og trommerduo Lightning Bolt spille på Spanien 19C på Århus Havn. En intens koncert der stadig tales om. Samme aften spillede tre bands mere - deriblandt en hardcore trio ved navn Studson.
Nu har to af medlemmerne skrællet deres hårde stil mere ind til benet som en ny duo under navnet Fossils. I skrivende stund har de to musikere, der så vidt jeg ved har geografisk udgangspunkt i Århus, omkring en håndfuld koncerter under bæltet som Fossils, men det er erfarne kræfter, der leverer varen.
Under Spotfestivalen i år arrangerede Klub Arrogant konceptet Arrogant Tour, hvor bandet spillede. Jeg fangede dem på video på spillested Lobby, hvor deres energi alene var en oplevelse, men også at de formåede med kun bas og trommer (og ingen vokal) rigeligt at variere deres udtryk blot ved hjælp af deres rytmer og riffs.
For nylig blev endnu en rigtig fed video lagt online fra en anden koncert. Begge klip kan ses herunder. Men tjek også Fossils MySpace-side, hvor der allerede er fede studieoptagelser med masse af rå energi: www.myspace.com/fossilsmusic

Spotlight

Jeg skrev vist tidligere, at jeg ville begynde at skrive lidt om bands og musikere, som jeg synes var spændende. Blandt andet bands, som man måske kunne forvente ville optræde på festivaler, der har som mål at kaste lys på nyt talent, men tilsyneladende ikke er dukket op på disses radar alligevel (grunden til det skal jeg ikke spekulere yderligere over her). Men jeg vil samtidig gerne kaste lidt lys over udenlandske kunstnere, spændende pladeselskaber og lignende. Så her på bloggen vil der fremover komme indlæg under titlen 'Spotlight'.

Og ja, jeg fortsætter vist på dansk her indtil videre.

Dansk eller English?

Jeg overvejer lidt om jeg bør lave bloggen her om til at være på engelsk. Jeg kan ikke rigtigt bestemme mig. Hælder efterhånden mere mod engelsk, så der måske opstår lidt flere læsere og kontakter på kryds og tværs. Men der vil samtidig altid være lidt flere nuancer i det skrevne, når der foregår på modersmålet.

Videointerview med Mads Stobberup (Klub Arrogant / Cola Freaks)

Under Spot-festivalen drev mit fokus lidt uden for de officielle rammer og - af gode grunde - blev det overført til Klub Arrogants aktiviteter ude i byen. I den forbindelse lavede jeg et lille interview med Mads Stobberup, der står bag Klub Arrogant (og Arrogant Tour under Spot-festivalen) og samtidig også står i front for punkbandet Cola Freaks og kører pladeselskabet Mastermind Records. Han talte bl.a. om hvorfor han lavede Arrogant Tour og egentligt synes jeg, at interviewet giver lidt stof til eftertanke m.h.t. den strategi (eller hvad det måtte være), der ligger bag udvælgelsen af bands til Spot-festivalen. Det skal ikke forstås fra en "Cola Freaks kom ikke med"-synsvinkel, men overordnet hvilket mål festivalen har og om hvorvidt den går den optimale vej for at opnå det.




2009 - june 3

Video med KURvE - balkanpunk for fuld udblæsning

I lørdags havde jeg fornøjelsen af blandt andet at se det århusianske balkanpunkband KURvE spille på Teater Katapult til arrangementet 'Balkan Express'. Bandet har eksisteret i en del år efterhånden, men er netop vendt tilbage med forstærket besætning i marts efter en længere pause.
Jeg filmede en del video fra koncerten og har uploadet et klip med tre sange. En fantastisk dejlig koncert. Prøv at se klippet til ende, da især sidste nummer virkelig kammer over i feststemning. Man ved, at festen er godt i gang, når musikerne smider instrumenterne og hopper ud i publikum, he-he.
Når jeg oplever denne slags, så undrer jeg mig over hvad jeg skal med det Danmark, som Dansk Folkeparti ifølge aktuelle annoncer vil "have tilbage". Er status quo virkelig noget at stræbe efter? Al udvikling som mennesket nogensinde har været igennem er opstået igennem fusioner, mutationer og hændelige uheld. Det er naturligt.
Hvis man ikke kan se værdien i det, som så tydeligt stilles til skue i blandt andet dette videoklip, så er man i sandhed en forstokket, sørgelig eksistens. Skulle man udsætte staklerne med Dansk Folkepartis ensporede tankesæt for denne vidunderlige musik, så virker formuleringen "at kaste perler for svin" pludselig meget nærliggende at bruge.
Der er heldigvis mange mennesker her til lands, der kan se værdien i mødet mellem kulturer og den glæde og den udvikling, der opstår.

2009 - may 27

Kommende koncerter i Århus

Der sker en del i Århus de næste par uger.

Skulle man have lyst til musik i denne uge, kan man starte allerede i aften (onsdag d. 27.), hvor A Hawk And A Hacksaw spiller på Musikcaféen. De altid spændende arrangører fra LJUD står bag. Det hele har et strejf af balkan og bandet har i duo-form for et par år tilbage spillet for et meget begejstre publikum samme sted.

Lørdag den 30. maj kan man også få sin lyst til masser af musik styret. På Lobby er der et 12 timer langt arrangement hele dagen med en lang række bands - bl.a. Samme aften spiller det lokale balkanpunk band KURvE igen til 'Balkan Express'-arrangementet på Teater Katapult (tæt ved Pustervig Torv og Store Torv) kl. 21.00. Video fra Spot Festivalen 2009

Jeg filmede en del under Spot-festivalen. Både "indenfor murene", men så sandelig også udenfor, hvor der var godt (hvis ikke mere) gang i den. Denne video samler en masse små klip fra en række koncerter. Senere får jeg redigeret nogle længere klip med noget af det bedste fra det jeg skød undervejs. Det bliver hovedsageligt fra Arrogant Tour, men nok også lidt fra Lyd+Litteratur-delen af festivalen.

Spot Festival 2009 - Dag 2 + 3

Så er Spot festivalen overstået for i år. Jeg synes ellers, at jeg forsøgte, men jeg synes ikke, at jeg blev ret mange gode oplevelser rigere, når man ser på festivalens omfang og officielle sigte.

Respekt for missionen, men...
Hvad vil Spot? Have dansk musik ud i den store verden. Skabe store musiknavne, der gavner dansk eksport og lægger til imaget af Danmark som en spændende kulturnation. Spots model er at invitere udenlandske musikpressefolk (gerne de toneangivende), bookere, pladeselskabsfolk og lignende branchehoveder til at overvære alle disse bands - hovedsageligt fra Skandinavien.
En nobel mission - og al respekt og sympati for den. Men hvis en kritik skal sættes lidt på spidsen, så vil jeg sige, at det virker som en noget ensidet strategi, der både er gammeldags og delvis forfejlet.
'Delvis' fordi der naturligvis er branchefolk, der opdager ny musik og derefter agerer til dens fordel. Men samtidig - og i disse dage nok i større grad - finder musikken ud til lytterne på anden vis. Altså, uden om mange af disse branchefolk. Det er en kompliceret proces, der naturligvis involverer mange af de online sociale medier, og det skal jeg ikke sidde og redegøre for her. Bl.a. fordi jeg ikke - som sikkert også mange andre - har gennemskuet den proces til bunds endnu.
Så lad os lige se på den anden del...

Dyk længere ned
Med fokus på den måde, som Spot så benytter sig af, så virker udvalget af kunstnere ganske simpelt mestendels reaktionært, alt for forsigtigt og uden en reel finger på pulsen. En festival, der har som sigte at præsentere "det nye" bør dykke dybere ned i vækstlaget. Jeg vil vove den påstand, at en del af dem, der har siddet i udvælgelseskomitéen ikke har gjort deres arbejde ordentligt og ikke udvist ægte nysgerrighed og føling med det danske musikmiljøs virkeligt spændende spillere. Det behøver det ikke at blive utilnærmeligt "arty" af, skal jeg lige tilføje.
Det er naturligvis en påstand. Men hvis det ikke er tilfældet, så må det være fordi festivalen er bange for at skræmme nogle af deres indskibede branchefolk væk. Det virker som om de helst skal pleases alle sammen over én bred kam.
Lad mig derfor sige det lige ud: Sæt bands på scenen og vov at skræmme halvdelen eller flere væk. Hvis bare én eller to af de mange branchefolk falder for det pågældende band, så falder de så meget hårdere, at det vil få mere "impact". De mennesker må alt andet lige også være mere kræsne end gennemsnittet og samtidig kunne se mulighederne i ting, der har mere kant.

En opsummering
* Overordnet om Spot 2009 vil jeg sige, at det stadig er en lidt underlig konstruktion, hvor det almene publikum skal overvære koncerter, hvor de ikke er den primære målgruppe, men i stedet de få udvalgte branchefolk, der gemmer sig et sted i mængden.
*Samtidig viste indtil flere koncerter på festivalens største scene, at mellemstore navne sagtens kan fylde stedet, og at der derfor ikke er brug for store allerede kendte navne (i år bl.a. Tim Christensen og til dels Magtens Korridorer) til at tiltrække billetkøberne. Folk har vænnet sig til tanken om Spot som stedet, hvor der skal findes nye oplevelser. Så argumentet med at tiltrække pøblen med kendte hovednavne - til gavn for de små navne - holder ikke helt mere. Desuden kunne der på den konto sikkert være en del penge at spare. Så kunne publikum måske også slippe for at få "Guitar Hero"-sponsorater og lignende klasket i hovedet.
* Festivalens størrelse virker også efterhånden som et problem. Den er simpelthen blevet for stor. For mange scener og for mange bands. Oplevelserne kan for let blive "halve" og forhastede - og samtidig kan det kniber med overskueligheden. Så hellere 'kvalitet over kvantitet', som man jo så ofte siger.
* Musikhuset i Århus er en praktisk ramme. Mange scener på få kvadratmeter. Men jeg vil stadig mene, at det er en ramme, der er på direkte kollisionskurs med hele vækstlagstanken og kan virke direkte hæmmende for oplevelsen af musikken. Den øger afstanden til publikum. Musikhuset... it ain't rock'n'roll. Nul nerve. Emsige vagtfolk der ikke lader folk tage øl med til en koncert hjælper heller ikke.
* I år kunne man desuden opleve hvordan arrangementer udenfor Spot festivalen tog form. Ikke blot som hippe "afterparties" som årene før, men også som gedigne koncerter. Ja, endda en lille turné i form af Arrogant Tour af folkene bag Klub Arrogant. Ikke overraskende var det netop her, at man kunne opleve mest "kant" i musikken. Det var en af de bedste overraskelser i år - og i sagens natur ikke på Spot festivalen egen konto. Så festivalen har nu en eksistensberettigelse som i gangsætter af en massiv koncentration af musik i Århus i tre dage i løbet af året - og det kan så bruges til noget fornuftigt uden for dens rammer. Nøjagtigt som det er sket i Austin, Texas, på South By Southwest. Næste år sker der sikkert en eksplosion i egne initiativer udenfor festivalens "mure", som ikke blot er afterparties.
Tænk engang... på Spot... sponsorreklamer over det hele og små fadøl til 40 kroner. I den helt anden ende: Arrogant Tour i Guldsmedegade med musik med nerve - og i øjenhøjde - med gratis entré, gratis øl og gratis grillpølser (ved de andre arrangementer var der ligeledes billige drikkevarer).

De positive oplevelser
Det bedste der skete indenfor på Spot festivalen var Lyd+Litteraturs endagsarrangement, hvor de altid engagerede og fremfor alt nysgerrige og udfordrende ildsjæle bag bl.a. Danmarks bedste musikblad Geiger stod for programmet. Bl.a. med T.S. Høeg, MikkelModulererMarius og Skammens Vogn på scenen. Acts der skiller vandene. Som det burde være. Især Skammens Vogn var en positiv overraskelse.
Udenfor Spot på Arrogant Tour piskede Cola Freaks, Powersolo og Kim & The Cinders gang i løjerne med hjerte og sjæl. Og i samme ramme fik jeg fornøjelsen af at opleve Fossils og Ice Age for først gang. En stor fornøjelse.
Og hvad med Spot? Ja, ser man bort fra al musikken, så er det jo der, at alle der roder med musik i Danmark på den ene eller anden måde mødes hvert år. Det er en velkommen lejlighed til at se venner og bekendte - og møde nye mennesker - når f.eks. musikken alligevel ikke brænder så voldsomt igennem.
Måske burde jeg bruge lidt tid på i denne blog fremover at smide nogle bands op, som burde være i Spots søgelys af indlysende årsager.
Planen er at klippe lidt video sammen - af godt og dårligt - fra Spot. De fedeste ting tror jeg dog, at jeg lægger lidt længere uddrag fra op, hvis jeg kan komme afsted med det.
Jeg har desuden en masse andet godt video på lager, som skal online i den kommende tid. Dog har jeg vist ikke video til alle dem, jeg synes fortjener ekstra opmærksomhed.

2009 - may 22

Spot Festival 2009 - Dag 1

Spot Festival nok engang. Kan snart ikke huske hvornår jeg var med første gang. Jeg tror, at det var 1997 - og jeg har været med lige siden. Og i den proces langsomt blivende mindre og mindre imponeret efterhånden som festivalen voksede og voksede. Men nu får vi se hvordan det går i år.
I går torsdag var det åbningsaften. En ting der tidligere betød en enkelt koncert med et par bands på Voxhall eller i Musikhuset. Sidstnævnte har i de senere år været det selvskrevne sted til at skyde det hele i gang med et eller andet stort. I år med bands iklædt symfoniorkestre.

Så langt så godt...

Kludder i logistikken
Som akkrediteret deltager (for http://www.aarhus-nu.dk/) var køen til armbåndet dejlig kort. Dog fik jeg der intet at vide om, at jeg for at kunne se aftenens åbningsseance skulle have en ekstra blå billet. Da jeg stod ved indgangen til salen og lærte dette gik jeg tilbage til presseindgangen, men de havde ikke flere blå billetter.
Det generede mig egentligt ikke, selv om det virkede amatøragtigt. Men der var publikummer, der havde købt billet til alle tre dage og var kommet specielt for at se dette, og som fik at vide, at dem med en-dags-billetter til denne aften havde førsteret til salen. Lyder underligt og uretfærdigt. Undrer mig over om det kan passe.
Men der stod jeg så med en fin undskyldning for ikke at skulle placere mig i de konforme Spot-rammer. I stedet gik jeg hen, hvor jeg fra starten vidste, at der ville ske noget fedt. Noget med nerve. På Lobby skød de lokale Klub Arrogant-arrangørere deres Arrogant Tour i gang. Fire koncerter over de tre Spot-dage rundt om i byen med en fremragende samling hidsig, sjov og sprudlende rock i forskellige afskygninger.

Force majeure skal der til!
Et skybrud af en art ramte Århus et sted mellem kl. 21 og 22 og jeg droppede idéen med at tage videre på Train for at se "Amélie"-komponisten Yann Tiersen spille - eller den japansk sangerinde på Pakhuset, som jeg ikke kan huske hvad hedder.
Senere forlød det via sms, at folk stod i kø ude foran Train og ikke kunne komme ind. Endnu en sms spredte nyheden om, at Musikcaféens strømanlæg til scenen havde fået vand. Det var simpelthen sevet ned indenfor. Aftenens første act spillede i stedet en hel akustisk koncert uden forstærkning. Det skaber naturligvis den slags unikke koncertøjeblikke, der opstår netop når de konforme rammer nedbrydes og udfordres. Man kunne håbe, at nogen et eller andet sted lærer noget af det. Resten af aftenens musik på Musikcaféen blev aflyst.
Så alt i alt ikke den store åbningssucces. Den storladne symfoniske satsning i Musikhuset hørte jeg en del forskelligt om. Lige fra flot til småkedeligt.

Nerven
Men ja, jeg blev på Lobby. Her mæskede jeg mig i Powersolo, Fossils og Cola Freaks. I øvrigt første gang, at jeg fik muligheden for at se Fossils. En duo på trommer og forvrænget bas. Ingen vokal, men masser af energi. En meget positiv overraskelse. Jeg filmede undervejs fra det hele og lægger noget online senere på http://www.aarhus-nu.dk/ - og formentligt også større uddrag af de fedeste ting, hvor jeg kan få lov til det.

Slipstrømmen udnyttes langt om længe
Især i år er det tydeligt, at flere og flere lægger sig i Spots slipstrøm omkring i byen i form af store afterparties og andre koncerter. Der har i de senere år været lidt her og der, men det er lidt som om, at der i år bare sker mere. Lige fra hipster Vice Magazine afterparty på Voxhall til the down and dirty good shit som f.eks. Arrogant Tour.
Underligt at det ikke er sket før. Det virker lidt som om at tiden nu er løbet fra Spot. Deres udvælgelse af bands har ikke helt den kant, som der egentligt bør være på en festival med det sigte, den har. Og så er den ganske simpelt nok blevet for stor. Stor er ikke nødvendigvis bedre. Så hellere bruge noget energi på at udvælge færre og bedre ting. Kvalitet over kvantitet. Men den vej går det nok næppe. Det kan de små selvstændige aktører rundt i byen så leve højt på. Der er masser af folk i byen, der er på jagt efter ny musik, og hvis Spot ikke behager nok, så kan de bare gå udenfor hegnet og få sig en oplevelse "in the underbelly". Der hvor du kan stå på første række og blive ramt af nerven, sveden og lydmuren.
Spørgsmålet er om Spot kan undværes som knudepunktet, som de andre læner sig op ad. Sikkert ikke. Det er fint. Men det kunne være fedt, hvis hele byen gik amok i musik - udenfor Spots og ROSAs (og derved også Statens) påvirkning. Måske lidt som South By Southwest i Austin, Texas? Der kan man selvfølgelig snakke om kvantitet. Meget, meget og alt for meget, så vidt jeg kan forstå. Men der er noget godt i det også. Musik har brug for det anarkistiske element.
Men jeps, min Spot festival er startet for i år - uden at have set så meget som én koncert på det officielle Spot-program. Sådan kan det gå, når vejrguderne og anden god musik spiller ind. De to sidste dage får jeg dog nok tjekket en del ud. Det bliver dog nok lidt på må og få her og der. Vi får se.



2009 - january 24

Året der gik

Før vi gik ind i 2009 blev jeg spurgt af Danmarks bedste musikmagasin Geiger om jeg ville skrive lidt om hvad jeg synes var mest spændende m.h.t. musik i 2008. En del andre blev også spurgt. Alle de mange bidrag er delt over to sider:

Teksten - der var ret lang - er tilsyneladende blevet forkortet lidt af redaktionen. Bl.a. er årets plader og en del af koncerterne er røget ud. Jeg havde nu tænkt mig at sætte den i min blog alligevel, så nu er der en grund mere. Hermed den uforkortede udgave...


Årets musikoplevelser 2008

Disse ord skrives i Århus, hvor jeg netop er tilbage igen efter tre et halvt års ”eksil” et unavngivent sted i den sjællandske provins, hvor det kulturelle udbud ligger på nulpunktet. For en tid var det småt med koncerter, mens onlineshoppingen blomstrede (yderligere) op. Ikke helt ufarligt.

Tilbage i den jyske musikby er der sket ting og sager. En flok hovedløse byrødders kabale har kastet Huset ud på sidelinien. Den fabelagtige Fabriken i Klostergade – der havde et vildt, men kort liv – er invaderet af Heidis Bierstube. I sig selv vel næsten på symbolsk vis den ultimative fornærmelse? Indtil flere århusianske musikere har taget turen til hovedstaden (har vi set det før?), men den vidunderligt skæve og mest forvredne del af musikscenen syder heldigvis stadig. Jeg er allerede dykket ned i den suppe igen. Skønt!

Et af mine større musikalske spring i år var – efter 13 festivaler i træk – at droppe Roskilde Festival. De gode bands var set før på bedre scener (f.eks. Battles og Liars på Fabriken). I stedet købte jeg billet til Radiohead i Berlin i ugen efter. Selve Roskilde-stemningen druknede nok lidt i 2007 for mit vedkommende.

2008 var året, hvor Forma Nova festivalen desværre stoppede. Heldigvis blev den århusianske Elektronisk Jazzjuice i år endnu bedre end tidligere. Specielt fire koncerter sidder stadig i mig:
Eugene Chadbourne – den amerikanske madman og strenge-virtuos tryllebandt i hvert fald undertegnede fra et hjørne af Musikcaféens baggård, som han sad der med krøllede grå lokker, runde briller og vommen klemt inde bag banjo og el-guitar.
Nisennenmondai – de tre japanske tøser, der slog benene fuldstændigt væk under hele festivalen med deres überenergiske semi-krautrockede udladninger. Enhver mandlig musiknørd til stede blev ganske sikkert også hemmeligt forelsket i disse seje chicks.
De to bedste koncerter – skarpt forfulgt af de to norske acts: Nils Økland, der tryllebundt et forstummet publikum med sin Hardanger violin, og Alog, der (heldigvis) lagde laptoppen på hylden og skabte en organisk slags ”electronica” på sære, analoge træinstrumenter. Hvis man skal nævne et exceptionelt dansk act på Jazzjuice må vi tilbage til året før og Yoyo Oyoy allstarr-koncerten.

Ligeledes i Århus finder man en af de nok skæveste festivaler: Frem & Forstærket. I den tredje version tog Singvogel et skridt mod det mere rockende end før. Jeg fik desuden taget min Cola Freaks-mødom, så det var en fryd. Ikke så meget pis dér. En fabelagtigt lille festival hele vejen igennem.

Sommeren bød også på to ture til Berlin. I maj havde jeg fornøjelsen af at opleve den amerikanske rapper Bleubird og tyskeren Jayrope sammen under navnet Prinzenallee på Bar25 ved bredden af Spree-floden. Improv-rap over kejtet percussion og gameboy synthlyde. Jeg var solgt.

I juli var jeg afsted igen. Jeg havde to planlagte koncerter ved afgang fra Danmark, men i sidste ende kun én aften uden livemusik. Radiohead oplevede jeg fra første række på Wühlheide amfiteateret og de indfriede de forventninger jeg havde. Flot koncert. Turens overraskelser kom dog i form af Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog på Wasser Festival i Haus Der Kulturen Der Welt, hvor den lejlighedsvise Tom Waits-guitarist blandede surf, latin og syrejazz i et vildt ridt sammen med Ches Smith på trommer og Shahzad Ismaily på bas, moog og percussion. Vildt og vanvittigt.
Selv med rigeligt århusiansk støjelektronik fra NoiseJihad på mit koncertgænger-cv formåede Australske Justice Yeldham at give mig en ny oplevelse i en petit kælder på Madam Claude i Berlin. Bogstaveligt talt var der mere ”kant”. Med et kæmpe glasskår forstærket med kontaktmikrofoner forbundet til distortionpedaler fik han støjen yderligere ud til publikum gennem en performance, der gled over i ”selfmutilation”. Det blev blodigt efterhånden. En interessant oplevelse – der også lød fedt.
På Tentstation ramlede jeg ind i en helt magisk aften med Manuela Krause som dj, Marzipan Marzipan fra mit eget SOPA-label live og som DJ samt en små-improviseret koncert med Betty Confetti – en charmerende to-stemmet ukulele-duo med engelske rødder, der dog til dagligt huserende i Argentina og Sverige.Nok engang dokumenterede hvad jeg stødte på og det kan ses på www.larsdideriksen.com/berlin.

Store Vega bød i år bl.a. på Einstürzende Neubauten, DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist presents The Hard Sell og The Mars Volta. Flotte og fornøjelige koncerter, der dog ikke bød på de store overraskelser.
Ligeledes med Portishead i KB Hallen. Det var trods alt bedre. Jeg har dog prøvet at angribe det anmelderroste ”Third”-album fra forskellige vinkler, men jeg kan ikke tilslutte mig den kollektive skyhøje begejstring. Spændende idéer, ja, men bandet virker denne gang som middelmådige musikere, mens Beth Gibbons med sin skønne vokal synes at synge til en anden plade.
Wild Billy Childish & The Musicians Of The British Empire var på Loppen helt nede på jorden. Jeg havde ikke set ham siden hans fremragende solo blues gig på den allerførste Gutter Island festival. Skønt gensyn. I 2008 fik jeg endelig dykket ned i store dele af hans bagkatalog og tjekket nogle af hans bøger ud.
Skamløst oversete Blob Back Fahrenheit spillede på Loppen og overraskede som altid. Med bandets Århus-koncert i frisk erindring ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ob2IDUgFF2U ) oplevede jeg hvordan syrerocken denne gang tog mere greb om bandet end freejazzen. Hvad kan jeg sige? Se dem!

Når jeg skal finde udgivelser, jeg har lyttet til i 2008, og som reelt er udgivet det år, så er der kun få titler, der melder sig blandt dem, der satte sig fast i hjernevævet:
Eugene Chadbournes “Peking Doc”, Nisennenmondais “Destination Tokyo”, Némeths ”Film”, Mount Eeries “Lost Wisdom” (med Julie Doiron og Fred Squire) og Lucky Dragons’ “Dream Island Laughing Language”.

De fleste er fra året før - og meget længere tilbage (30’erne). I 2008 lyttede jeg bl.a. meget til: LP-opsamlingen ”Life Is A Problem”, Tenniscoats’ ”Tan-Tan Therapy” og ”Totemo Aimasho”, Panda Bears ”Person Pitch”, en masse ældre Tom Waits, The Black Keys og blues fra ”way back” (Howlin’ Wolf, Son House, Lightning Hopkins osv.). PJ Harveys ”White Chalk”, Thom Yorkes ”The Eraser” og Radioheads ”In Rainbows” hang stadig ved i år – sidstnævnte dog nok mest fordi jeg stadig undrer mig over, hvordan de på papiret gode sange kunne lyde så middelmådige. Mixningen var desuden et skandale af en vacuum-oplevelse. Er jeg masochist?

I 2008 har jeg også hygget med lommebogserien ”33 1/3” og kan anbefale dem om Beastie Boys’ ”Paul’s Boutique”, David Bowies ”Low” og DJ Shadows ”Endtroducing…”. Tom Waits’ ”Swordfishtrombones” og Nirvanas ”In Utero” var også okay, men dog ikke på samme niveau. De er alle snacksize – lige til en togtur.

Selv om jeg er noget inhabil her vil jeg dog samtidig sige, at flere af de dejlige oplevelser med nye udgivelser i 2008 har været dem, jeg selv har været med til at udgive. De forbavser mig stadig. Jeg holder utroligt meget af dem og håber, at flere får øjnene op for disse talenter: Girls Love Rallies “Les Chansons Terribles”, Delay Lamas “Mk. I”, Agata & Mes “Overnite EP” og kunstnerne på opsamlingerne “SOPA CURIOSA” – og fra sidst i 2007: ”SOPA DELICIOSA”.

Lyder især spændende med Ribot-tingen. Jeg aldrig rigtig turdet nærme mig ham. Det sker nok en dag.

Du fremhæver også Neubauten (den var jeg også til). God koncert! Har du set at Blixa kommer med et eller andet syret soloshow på Gasværket? Ved ikke helt hvad jeg skal sige til det.

Ribot var fed live. Selve cd'en han havde med var lidt mere velfriseret og stramt produceret. Jeg er dog rimelig vild med hans cover af The Doors' "Break On Through", som han både spillede live og som er på cd'en.

Overvejede Blixa, men det blev for dyrt at tage turen. Ville ellers gerne. Kan godt lide spoken word kombineret med eksperimenterende lyd.

Fra gemmerne: Under Byen

Jeg har endelig fået rodet igennem stakken af gamle vhs-bånd. Det lykkedes mig at finde de Under Byen-interviews, som jeg vidste, jeg havde et eller andet sted. Det vil dog være synd at kalde nogle af disse interviews for decideret gode. Men der er i det hele taget ikke lavet så mange med bandet.

Dog fanger Henriette Sennenvaldt meget godt intervieweren omkring definitionen "popmusik" Intet under, at hun ikke har så meget lyst til at give interviews mere og lader andre i bandet klare den slags. :-)

Jasmina Maschina live video

Jeg filmede alle tre koncerter med Jasmina Maschina og Golden Diskó Ship, som jeg var til og var med til at arrangere.

Jasmine, der er lydtekniker, lavede et mix af et af numrene fra koncerten i København, så jeg fiksede billederne til. Personligt synes jeg ikke, at det var settets stærkeste nummer, så jeg regner med at få lavet flere videoer med nogle af de andre numre senere.

Facebook gruppe oprettet

Jeg har oprettet en Facebook-gruppe som et lille supplement til bloggen.

Det er lidt lettere at sprede ordet m.h.t. ny musik er og desuden også eventuelle arrangementer, hvor der enten er et spændende band, der spiller, eller hvor jeg måske selv vender nogle plader.

Jeg blev inspireret af to andre "pladevendere" på Århus-kanten, som har startet sådan nogle grupper. Fin idé. Hermed hugget. ;-)

2008 - september 19

Tonight's the night

Så er det i aften, at Jasmina Maschina og Golden Diskó Ship spiller deres sidste koncert på deres Skandinavien turné. Den startede i Århus, fortsatte til Göteborg, kom forbi Århus igen, for derefter at slå ned i Næstved og Malmö og i aften runde af på Huset i Magstræde i København.
Politiken havde en foromtale af arrangementet i dagens avis. Der nævnes jeg som "den berlinerverliebte motor bag pladeselskabet SOPA". Og ja, jeg kan jo nok ikke løbe fra det. Dog står der også, at jeg dj'er og spiller musik fra min "udsøgte tyske pladesamling". Uha-da. Jeg har ganske givet mere tysk musik i samlingen end jeg lige aner, men det er ikke noget, jeg har fokuseret mere på end musik fra andre lande. Anyways, jeg må hellere taget det hele med, he-he. Rub og stub von der kraut. Det skal nok blive en ganske interessant udfordring. Stilartene vil være "all over the place". Ikke bare "minimalistisk berliner-techno". Det har jeg da vist egentligt ikke ret meget af, he-he.
Jeg har filmet og optaget koncerterne i Århus (Gyngen) og Næstved. Gør det også i aften. Det kunne være sjovt at prøve at lave en lille koncert/turnéfilm. Vi får se. Om ikke andet skulle der være garanti for nogle ganske gode optagelser til YouTube.

Berlin fragmenter

Tilbage i maj i år var jeg på endnu en tur til Berlin. Denne gang fik jeg bikset en lille YouTube sammen fra turen. Jeg håber også at få lavet en fra min efterfølgende tur i juli. Men her er i hvert fald den fra maj.

Elektronisk Jazzjuice 2008

Jeg har lidt travlt for tiden, så det med at skrive en masse må vente lidt. Jeg tror dog lige, at jeg vil gøre opmærksom på nogle forskellige videoer, jeg har lavet og lagt på YouTube. Bl.a. denne fra en af Danmarks bedste musikfestivaler: Elektronisk Jazzjuice.

Mine favoritter i år var Nils Økland, Eugene Chadbourne og Nisennenmondai. Men generelt var det et stærkt program. Bl.a. var Alog meget spændende. De havde fundet en helt ny stil siden jeg sidst så dem. Klart en forbedring.





2008 - september 8

Den nysgerrige mixtapers ultimative opgave

Jeg sidder i disse dage og lægger sidste hånd på en ny compilation, der skal udgives på SOPA. Som sidste gang - på dobbelt-cd'en "SOPA DELICIOSA" - er det en dejligt broget flok. Ordet "mixtape" har sjovt nok overlevet ind i cd-alderen. Hvorfor og hvordan ved jeg ikke lige. Måske ligger det bare godt på tungen. Jeg lavede dem også i sin tid. Så blev det til hjemmebrændte cd'er og nu om dage, så bliver det af og til dvd'er med mp3er på. Dog stadig mest cd'er til afspilleren.

I bund og grund handler det om at dele sin entusiasme for noget. En meget naturlig ting. Derfor er "mixtapet" naturligvis en af musiknørdens yndlingsbeskæftigelser. At samle sin favoritter i det givne øjeblik fra diverse udgivelser og samtidig hele tiden have modtageren - denne ene person - for øje. Eller øre, om man vil.

Det jeg sidder med nu er sådan set også et mixtape. Godt nok er modtagergruppen ukendt, men selve samlingen af numrene er helt personlig og sat sammen ud fra egne smagsløg. Og ja, det er jo en compilation, men ordet "mixtape" dukkede op i den enormt rare anmeldelse, som "SOPA DELICIOSA" fik af Geiger. Den var ligefrem et "bevidsthedsudvidende mixtape", stod der. :-)
Nu er jeg så i gang igen. Andet heat - og med mere end rigeligt musik at dele ud af. Sikket et job at have, ikke? At lave et mixtape med musik, som ingen stort set har en chance for at kende i forvejen. Målgruppen må siges, at være de oprigtigt og seriøst nysgerrige sjæle. :-)

Hvordan 2'eren her - kaldet "SOPA CURIOSA" - bliver modtaget er naturligvis ikke godt at vide. Gudskelov for det, kan man jo tilføje. Spillerummet er kun én cd denne gang og måske genremæssigt knapt så bred som sidst. Og dog: på de lidt over 20 numre, der pt. er klar, så er spændvidden stadig stor. Først var jeg nervøs for, at der kom alt for meget "stille" materiale ind, men efterhånden er der dukket mere og mere op med tempo på. Selv om hele indsamlingsprocessen i høj grad dikterer det endelige indhold (det må være den rigtige "x-factor", he-he. Når jeg starter ved jeg slet ikke, hvor jeg ender), så er jeg af uransagelig årsager endt med at have god balance i lydbillede, variation, tempo og genrer, mens der stadig synes at være overordnet ramme, som nysgerrige ører kan være med på uden at blive kastet af vognen i svingene.

Et af de første bands, jeg fik numre fra var Sister Chain & Brother John. En duo, der som så mange musikere, er rykket til Berlin. Hun synger og han spiller guitar eller bas. Ekstremt simpelt. Det lyder måske pænt og nydeligt, men nej, der er masser af dirty nerve og underfundige idéer. De har netop udgivet deres debutalbum som duo på LP og den er bestemt værd at investere i. Man kan tager en lytter på Myspace, hvis nysgerrigheden er for stor. :-)

Så snart jeg ved hvad pladen skal koste kommer den i SOPA-shoppen. Har 10 stk. at sælge af. Der er endnu ingen andre i Danmark, der har den LP til selv. Men jeg håber, at kunne hjælpe med at ændre på det faktum. :-)

En petit invasion fra Berlin

På det seneste har jeg bevæget mig lidt ud i rollen som koncertbooker. Eller er det manager? Nå, lige meget. Faktum er, at jeg har været med til at sætte en turné i stand med to spændende piger fra Berlin: Jasmina Maschina og Golden Diskó Ship. Jasmina er dog oprindeligt fra Sydney.

Jeg klippede en lille "trailer" sammen for at sprede ordet lidt om turnéen. Siden jeg lavede den er der dog kommet flere datoer til...

Så er jeg her igen.

For år tilbage skrev jeg lidt på Blogspot. Meget lidt. Så jeg slettede den igen. Har siden holdt mig til at blogge på min egen hjemmeside www.larsdideriksen.com/blog. Men det er ren html-site, så ikke noget smart blog-cms der. Men nu prøver jeg igen.

Før var det på engelsk og meget om musik. Men jeg tror nu, at jeg bare giver los her om alt fremover.

Got my "weavil" machine from Tom Bugs yesterday. A little contraption that makes one hell of a bunch of cool noises. Hours of fun, I'm sure. Tom makes quite few of these (and others) and sells them via his website.
He also sent along a cd of his, "The Shifted Sands", which was a really positive surprise. Reminds me of the self-titled album from The For Carnation - which is definitely not a bad thing at all.
Also... I put together a little "video medley" of snapshots from the Elektronisk Jazzjuice festival in Aarhus, Denmark, last weekend. Easily one of the best and most exciting festivals in the country. Of course, it's not widely known as many of the bigger festivals. But hey, if you want the good stuff you don't get it served on a silver platter, right?

Finally got around to actually getting myself a Supersilent cd. Saw them live some years ago. Superb. Got hold of some mp3s later. Also great. I guess with number 8 to start with I can work my way backwards. :-)
Oh, and some down to earth uhm, "earthiness" from Mr. Gelb in the form of the album below, that I haven't heard in a while. Going "gelb" here again, I guess, in anticipation for the September 2nd album "proVISIONS" by Giant Sand.

People who know me also know that I like Berlin a lot. And anyone who has surfed around on this website might have caught on to that too, he-he.

Back in the cold war days of course East Germany etc. was standard material learned in school. Such an odd and absurd piece of history that it really stuck with me. And many others, I suppose. Still, the nitty-gritty details have eluded me. So I figured that since I'll go down there for the 8th time since 2004 soon I should maybe dig a bit. Well, I'm curious, obviously. Hopefully I can find some time to read something. And squeeze in those last few Berlin movies that I should see. Already seen "Faraway So Close", "Goodbye Lenin" and "The Lives Of Others". All great flicks. Next up is "Wings Of Desire" (yeah, I know I should have seen that first), "Downfall" and "Trouble". The last one is a less known film I bought at the Am Friedrichshain cinema on a previous trip. And yes, maybe it would also be good to see one of those music documentaries about Einstürzende Neubauten in the 80's.
I guess this is all pretty basic stuff. And there are of course plenty more. But I look forward to sink my teeth into the last bits of "the groundwork".








Haven't read much about Berlin, I must admit. Since school anyway. And what did I even read back then?
On my bookshelf I have for a long time had a book by Danish writer-and-much-more George Brandes. It's from 1885 (not a reprint) and it's a big one. Will probably be a totally unrecognizable Berlin in there, but nevertheless it could be interesting.
Surfed the web recently and read some reviews (some good, some less good) of different books that seemed to cover the subject from different angles and in different styles. I hope to sniff them out a bit before I go this time.








Yeah, "Bowie In Berlin". Why not, he-he? Still Berlin. And with Bowie. Perfect combo (just listen to the albums). I read the "33 1/3" pocket book about the "Low" album and it was well interesting, so this new one might go a bit deeper with this unique artist in a unique place in the world in a unique place in time.

Imagine what I could dig up if someone actually told me what to check out of this kind? I never really asked anyone. I should. Also in regards to music - past and present.

Speaking of music... What's with all this listening of old music these days? Have I finally gotten old... out of the blue? Didn't know it happened from one day to the other. I mean, getting nostalgic that way. That much. Putting on old UK 'electronica' (before that was a word even, I guess) from the 90's. Maybe it's just a phase? :-) Well, okay today some newer shit spun around. But hm, still kinda old school...

Spend quite a bit of the day in a car. And thus also in Paul's Boutique. Loud. I know this masterpiece of an album by heart. But somehow new things popped up. Nice how a change of venue and/or stereo can do that. Of course reading can do that too, so in this case I'd like to recommend the pocket book about the album in the "33 1/3" series. Not all writers in this series have done a good job, but Dan Leroy has with this one.
The amount of work that went into that album back in the late 80's - where it wasn't so easy to just stich everything together digitally - makes me respect the album and enjoy it even more. Despite relying heavily on "stolen" material it has that organic feel that makes it so obvious what current rap and hip-hop is missing. Perfection is boring. And yeah, I sound like an old fart now.
I've mentioned some of these books before, but no harm in doing that again.
There's also one on PJ Harvey's "Rid Of Me", but it seems it's one of those to avoid. Too bad. Would have loved to read more about the genesis of that album. Like "Paul's Boutique" also one of my all time favourites. Recent days I have enjoyed spinning it again. Too my delight I've noticed that it will be re-issued on vinyl soon so one don't have to pay ludicrous amounts on eBay for a used copy from the first printing. I am really looking forward to hearing this on vinyl. It was made for that. It would be nice if it was AAA like another Albini-produced favourite of mine - Low's "Secret Name" - but maybe it would be too much to hope for an all analogue transfer from the original masters directly to vinyl as it was done with Low's.
At the moment I try to find my favourite albums on vinyl. Not an easy task. Some really are only on cd (but luckily only a few of them). And others are so expensive I really don't wanna pay that kind of money. But I've lucked out a few times and found some nice ones this year (stumbling on Dauerfisch's "Crime Of The Century" in Berlin was a very pleasant surprise. I expected it to only be on cd). There are 48 "all time favourites". Quite a bunch. Got 22 of them. About 14-15 might be possible to get, but a handful of those would be at crazy prices and I'm not that desperate. I just want to hear the best in the best way possible.

Some say the best things in life are free. How true. Danish noiserock darlings Speaker Bite Me are giving a live album away right now. Go get it.
A little more costly, but nevertheless worth the money is the hyped Danish turntablism collected Den Sorte Skole. Nicely inventive and still old school. But hey, maybe being inventive - in the essence - is old school. Ya' hear, blingers?! ;-)

These last couple of days I've kind of rediscovered an old classic. Underworld comes down from the shelf every now and then. But cranking it up on the headphones on the train this weekend gave it a bit of new life. Nice.
A newer one by Radian also pleases quite a bit these days. Minimal drumming and slight jittery electronics "short circuit style" moving into sweeping glacial noise. Electrifying.

2008 - june 10

The trip to Berlin was wonderful. Great weather, chill vibe with friends and lots of music. I put up a whole lot of pictures and mp3s of my dj set here. After writing the introductory text on that page my friend Theresa a.k.a. Golden Diskó Ship reassured me that indeed there was still underground stuff happening in cool places. One of them being Neuköln. Made sense. The named had popped up a bit lately. Nice to know that when Prenzlauerberg has been overrun by tourists you can go elsewhere for the better stuff. Next time I will!

And since coming back SOPA has released to cds: Girls Love Rallie and Delay Lama. Damn fine pieces of work both of them. Been wanting to get "the lama sounds" out for years so I'm damn proud that SOPA has them out now. Dennis' old things shouldn't go unheard. They're too good for that.

Just got the latest issue of always exciting dvd mag Specialten. One of the nice treats on it this time is the music video "Woodsong I" by Make A Rising. It's also on YouTube. Mesmerizing stop-animation stuff, I must say.

Not the best of days. So finding some comfort in the words of a few of the old 80's pop classics that never really let go of me. More precisely the two songs "The Last Time" by Eurythmics and "Throwing It All Away" by Genesis. Tuned into their basic sentiment today, unfortunately.

Nice Einstürzende Neubauten gig last Wednesday. Expected a bit more noise, but all in all an interesting experience. A handful of times it was superb, but it wasn't all good for that two and half hours of playing time.

How to make a Sunday a Zenday...
Get up late. Put Tom Waits on the record player and make the omelette to end all omelettes. Eat it on the terrace. Then... do nothing. End the day by continuing your trip through the "Twin Peaks" dvd box. And be sure to do it not alone, but with someone. Oh yeah.
The omelette: plenty of eggs straight from a farm, milk, salt'n'pepper, thyme, mixed with bacon, champignons (mushrooms), spring onions, small cherry tomatoes and red sweet "snack" pepper fruits. Then on top: rucola salad and slices of brie cheese. Yup! Well tasty, I tell ya'.

Today I've finally taken a step towards making my new website. Got a nice picture of myself from the talented Steffen "Jint" Jørgensen (if you need web design and/or photo services get in touch with him). The photos was shot when I dj'ed at the 2nd Society warm up (SOPA Night #4) on April 3rd at Huset i Magstræde in Copenhagen. Great evening. SOPA artists 9 and Delay Lama played really well and we also made a nice new friend: Spejderrobot, who headlined the evening.
Anyways, this website will be part business, part personal. Will try and see if it works.

The West and independence for Tibet

Following the ongoing demonstrations for autonomy in Tibet, I must say that I am interested to see how Western leaders are going to react to the Tibetans desire to have their own countries.

When monks took to the streets in Myanmar (Burma) every Western leader stood up and condemned the Myanmar authorities for using violence against a peaceful demonstration and the military junta was once again told to set Aung San Suu Kyi free.

A few weeks ago the parliament in Kosovo declared independence from Serbia and the US along with most of its European allies welcomed Kosovo the world wide family of independent countries.

Now it is the Tibetans turn and where is the West?

The situation in Tibet is somewhat of a mixture of the situation in Myanmar and Kosovo. The demonstrators are monks who are walking peacefully in the streets as in Myanmar and the goal is independence or at least autonomy as in Kosovo.

Supporting the movements in Myanmar and Kosovo had no cost for the West. Neither Myanmar nor Serbia are important trade partners so the leaders of the West could take the moral high ground and show their sympathy for the people.

The situation in China is very different. China is one of if not the most important trade partner for the West and for some reason that gives the Chinese authority some kinds of carte blanche to violate human rights and to suppress it own people and the people of Tibet.

I am looking forward to hearing President Bush, Prime Minister Brown and representatives of the EU condemning China and if it was up to me a boycott of this summer’s Olympic Games would be in order.

U.S. urges Pakistanis to keep Musharraf, despite election defeat

The Bush administration is pressing the opposition leaders who defeated Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to allow the former general to retain his position, a move that Western diplomats and U.S. officials say could trigger the very turmoil the United States seeks to avoid.

U.S. officials, from President Bush on down, said this week that they think Musharraf, a longtime U.S. ally, should continue to play a role, despite his party's rout in parliamentary elections Monday and his unpopularity in the volatile, nuclear-armed nation.

Geiger reviews and recommends SOPA DELICIOSA!

A bit of SOPA news:

Denmark's best independent music magazine and webzine, Geiger, has reviewed SOPA DELICIOSA. A very positive review and also with a Geiger-recommendation.

"A monolith of a compilation. (...) SOPA DELICIOSA is one big homage to music. (...) Compiled with love as well as critical sense. (...) A generous mash-up of among other things lo-fi, electronica, singer-songwriting, hip-hop, indie/punk-hybrids and excentric excursions, which doesn't make sense to put in any boxes. It's like a mind-expanding mixtape!"
Writer Steffen B. Pedersen then singles out some of his favourite tracks. Like Big Daddy Mugglestone's opening accapella track which owes something to Frank Sinatra, but is still cheekily throw-away. Marzipan Marzipan's "The Love Song" which he counts among her best songs. He calls Le Fiasko "sublime" and their song "a true pearl". The slow haunting songs by The Sad Lovers and My Twin, he says reappear in his dreams. And Bleubird is a scoop on the compilation.
Even more so he gives his biggest applause to Andreas Hansn for his two contributions as A.K. Hansn and in front of hsi band Singvogel. "Essential", he writes. He concludes that these were his stand out picks among the 44 tracks and that SOPA DELICIOSA - delicous as it is - will not taste the same on two different tongues. He ends the review like this:
"If you like music in a wider sense - and even in a bizarre way - there is no excuse for not tasting this dish. And satisfied you will be - guaranteed."

The best of 2007 - expanded

I figured I should add a few words to my favourites from the past year. And I suddenly remembered two more albums I feel needed mentioning. They are in no particular order (ranked or alphabetical).


PJ HARVEY - WHITE CHALK
Oh, I love her guitarplaying, so why do I dig this so much? Well, she's really going out on a limb here. I always respect artists who dare to challenge themselves. Like allowing themselves to present their virtuoso shortcomings from taking on a new instrument - in this case the piano. And actually also pushing her voice to where it hasn't been before.
I guess Brian Eno said it really well in an interview back in 1990:
"If you've been doing a certain type of work for a while, you're familiar with it, you're quite accomplished at it, it's no longer clumsy. But when you start something new it is very clumsy, and it has all sorts of failures built into it; it's ugly, actually, at the beginning. But I've learned to believe, to trust that that's where interesting things come from -- from something that is somewhat cumbersome and unshapely, but strong."

ANDA BEAR - PERSON PITCH
A bit of a hyped album this year. But deservedly so. If you don't like reverb on your vocals you better avoid this. It's all over it. But with loops, sampled beats and superb vocal harmonies Panda Bear manages to transfer some Beach Boys-qualities to the current musical flavour of 2007. And he does it damn well.

SHIT & SHINE - LADYBIRD
A limited pressing LP by a very noisy bunch of people. What really amazes me here is that this is basically ONE song for the entire album (which fades now and up again when you change from side A to B). The same guitar riff and heavy drum beat for the whole duration and various vocals and effects added along the way. Yes, I'm a sucker for cool beats. A very powerful piece of music that is best when played looouud.

BUSDRIVER - ROADKILL OVERCOAT
I've really been enjoying his previous albums and his latest was no disappointment. A bit smoother than usual, but still has a lot of edge. We need some people to push rap and hip-hop to new places. He is one of them.

BLEUBIRD - RIP U$A
Bleubird is the other rapper who I think is doing great things with hip-hop these days. His previous album, the debut "Sloppy Doctor", got me into the whole genre again after many years away from it (being turned off by way too much bling and a general status quo in the genre - not counting the Anticon label). Bleubird is really an adventurous fellow not shy of bringing in influences from other genres to his very personal style. And on top of that his lyrics are damn great. Lots of personality... and not much gangsta, thank goodness.

BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY - THE LETTING GO
Once I got used to Mr. Oldham doing much of this album as duets with Dawn McCarthy and smoothing things up with strings to his stripped down guitar arrangements I really started to dig it. He's got the knack for great melodies and lyrics too, and of course his voice is one of a kind.

DEERHOOF - FRIEND OPPORTUNITY
Despite one band member leaving Deerhoof are still going strong. They have their "trademark sound", but manage to be playful enough to apply some new angles to it. The first single "The Perfect Me" is a melodic beatfest and the minimalistic "Kidz Are So Small" is hugely enjoyable electronic diddy with severely funny lyrics. Once again the band makes an album that's a blast from start to finish.

VARIOUS / FOCUS JAZZ - MORE MODERN JAZZ FROM THE WEWERJA ARCHIVE 1966 -1969
A bit of an odd release among all the others mentioned here. It's only a 12-inch with three tracks on it. And I mostly just dig one of them. The one by Erich Ferstl. It's so amazing. I can believe that something like this was made so long ago. The beat, the vocals and the whole slooow feeling of it is mesmerizing. Get it before it's gone!

TENNISCOATS - TOTEMA AIMASHO
I had the pleasure of seeing this Japanese duo live in 2007 at the Roskilde Festival. Naivistic melodies, not very Japanese flavoured as such, but of course they can't escape the asian origin - especially in the vocals and lyrics department. An album you can really crawl into and feel the warmth.

MURCOF - COSMOS
Norman Records of the UK called this "The best thing to come out of Mexico since Mescal." I can't say I would know, but I certainly enjoy this album. Moving from beatless free-floating soundscapes over "orchestral" arrangements to minimalistic electronic beats Murcof has made an incredible journey - which especially with headphones sooths and pokes in the right places.

PAPER - AS AS
Hm, maybe minimalism is a bit of a theme for me this year? The arrangements of Paper do not wave their arms about in a big way, but their half acoustic, half electronic tunes is an experience that surely pleases a lot.

And then I had the pleasure of releasing some music on my own label, SOPA , this year. And they have obviously meant a lot to me. It was a severe pleasure to put together a selection of super songs by MARZIPAN MARZIPAN. I can't get enough of her lo-fi pop with sensual voice and lyrics.

She also features - alongside 43 other artists - on the SOPA DELICIOSA compilation.

THE YEAR 'S DISAPPOINTMENTS
Björk's album "Volta"
- on which she invites plenty of superb musicians, but they're close to impossible to hear. Also she forgot to sing and instead chirped aimlessly. Been a fan for ages, but this time she lost the plot. An album with only three worthwhile songs. Not enough.
Radiohead: In Rainbows - on which the band apparently recorded it themselves and only let their regular producer mix it. Superb tunes, so-so lyrics (we get it, Thom, worms are icky) and sound that sounds more like it was assembled in a vacuum than actually recorded as a band. The album does not breathe at all. It's like the band wanted less multilayer texture this time and wanted to leave some room in the sound. But the room was empty (maybe they should leave ProTools at home and go put themselves in front of Steve Albini's mics and try and be a band in the studio too?). It's a shame, because the songs really deserve to breathe. The album is better than most could do, yes, but this is Radiohead. And they can do better than this. "You used to be alright - what happened?", they sing. Yes, indeed. But far from as big a letdown as Björk, which I still don't understand completely. They don't seem to have lost the plot in regards to composition. Still, not much new under the sun... "Bodysnatchers" sounds like the bastard son of the two old b-sides "Palo Alto" and "Cuttooth". Radiohead could have done better by just recording these songs properly and maybe poke Thom a bit in the lyrics department. And yeah, still bought a ticket for their Berlin show. Still a fan, but somewhat disappointed. The live show must be breathing, I'm thinking.
Scout Niblett live at Loppen, Copenhagen, on December 6. Going on stage drunk trying to start playing a handful of songs, not getting through a single one, and then walking off stage after an embarrasing 15 minutes. Too bad, it was only her that thought it didn't sound good. She must have it more hardwired in her spine than she thinks herself. An evening both artist and audience would like to forget, I'm sure.
A letdown, obviously, as I had been looking forward to the show for months. That is never part of any refund.
KURvE decided to call it a day. I'm okay with it, but damn, they were one of my favourite bands.

Getting back to what it's about - music cannot be bought

Artist: Radiohead

My recent post on the whole Radiohead discussion really resulted in some interested comments. Thanks, folks!

Articles on the band's decision have also made it to the Danish newspapers, obviously, and so far critics of Radiohead have been quoted for good measure ("fair and balanced"), but a sympathy for the band - and not the business - has been at the core of every piece I've read so far.

I guess most people are sick of the business, its ridiculous witchhunts and its clawing to an antiquated business model. No one likes a sore loser. The biz dug its own hole.

Anyways, not very nice to kick someone who's already down, so on we go...

I was watching a program from those Lonely Planet folks today (a part of the series called "6 Degrees", I believe). The enthusiastic traveller Toby was in Havana. Obviously he had to check out some of the local music. The young stuff, though, not Buena Vista Social Club.

So what does this have to do with Radiohead? I don't mean to make this a discussion of capitalism vs. communism. And I don't mean to sound like a hippie or something (but I might).

In the program we saw bands playing. For the heck of it, I suppose. And one of the musicians said:

Music cannot be bought

Music needs to be appreciated

Music needs to be done with the heart

Music is sacret

Yeah, as simple as that. And it sounded natural coming from a person in that environment. But the fact that he needed to state it means he knew about the big machinery that has a negative effect on music.

A utopian thought? Well, these guys were doing it. Right there on the film. There was no commercial machine around them dictating anything.

How naive that might sound to ears from this part of the world I felt it really hit the nail on the head.

If you look at man's total length of musical history then for how long has music been a product, something you paid for? Only a fraction (the most of the 20th century). Sure, musicians through time got money for their services, but bare with me.

Radiohead's step - and whoever "smaller" acts who have tried the same before them - has given us a chance to really reflect on music as a whole.

In western society we have been used to the fact that everything costs money (even love, some might argue?). Capitalism indoctrination, the left-wing conspiracy theorist might say. Society's evolution, others might say. Whatever it may be we have now been given a wake up call. Let's take this moment, pause, and think about what music really is.

Communication, I guess. On a non-verbal emotional level that resonates in all human beings no matter what colour and creed.

And now I really start to sound like a hippie, he-he. But what the hell, let's let that well-meaning lil' bugger inside come out and stomp on the cigar of Mr. Money for a little while... and get back to what it's all about. The music. Free of commerce. Free of society's norms which we have for so long accepted as "just they way things are".

Okay, I'll tumble a bit more with this thought on my own. It's a nice feeling. There are some interesting perspectives. Got some funny ideas how musicians could work in the future.

Man, I gotta go to Havana, he-he.

Speaker Bite Me!

Yeah, it's the band name. Figured I didn't need a clever title to grab someone's attention if they don't know the band already. The band name alone should do the trick.

Just a short post here to spread the word on this great band, because they are touring Denmark at the moment. And doing that very well, I suspect. A superb live act which I hope to catch some time at the end of their tour - at one of the Copenhagen area venues.

Speaker Bite Me had a bit of a comeback this year after members spending some years with solo projects of different kinds. Denmark's "grand old" indie rock band, so to speak. Came back to prove they're not afraid to try out new things. This time around: catchy pop. Speaker Bite Me-style, that is. The album is called "Action Painting". Years earlier they among others released the album "If Love Is Missing It Must Be Imposed" which was a more guitar-based deal. What can I say? Check 'em both out. Or more. They got a little handful of albums to their name. Their two singers have released albums as Martin Ryum and Jomi Massage.

Have a listen to the mp3 "Teach Me Tiger" below. A difficult choice between this track and "Belle De Boskop". So do yourself the favour and go to their MySpace at listen to that one too.

So bands have to produce quality music now? Oh no!

Radiohead's surely the talk of the town these days for allowing people to pay nothing for downloading their new album "In Rainbows". A gutsy move - and I would say more than a we-did-it-first marketing gimmick.

A bold statement, yes. Someone big had to try it out. I hindsight, it being Radiohead seems natural, logical. Throwing a wrench in the corporate engine, giving hardcore capitalism a punch in the nose.

Of course, Thom & Co won't go to bed hungry because of this. They have their strong fanbase who will surely pay at least a bit for the mp3s. Or of course the £40 box with everything. Why not? They're likable lads too.

In articles published at the moment some argue that the band can only do this because they are that big. Yes, that makes sense. Unknown bands might suffer from this move, these people say. But... what do these newcomers get in the first place when signing to a label? Not much. Are they better off without a label? Might be. We'll see. Radiohead started something new on that level yesterday.

Radiohead fansite Ateaseweb quotes The Times:

"What this move really relies on though, is the notion that between Radiohead and their fans is a collateral of trust and, dare the term be uttered, decency. Whilst that collateral might not be there between, say Sugababes and their fans, it's the very thing that has propelled Radiohead to this point of unprecedented autonomy."

I've been saying for years that if you can't get people to pay for your music (and they download it instead) it's because it doesn't mean anything to them. It doesn't have any value. Be it emotional or artistic. If people just use music as background noise (when vacuuming cleaning?) then they're not listening anyway. Fine with me!

Try comparing to other products? Just a thought: Does a Ferrari cost the same as a Toyota? Easy answer.

So I'm thinking: Does this mean that musicians will have to make music that matters now? Something that really reaches people on a deeper personal level than just aspiring to be moneymaking background noise? Oh no! If Sugacubes and their kind will be out of a job... you won't find me shedding a single tear. Maybe it'll get them working harder to actually produce something of value? Now that would be a positive effect.

With all this colourful, but tasteless confetti out of the way new artists might even have it easier finding an audience. And if their material is a strong enough they will surely capture our hearts if they deserve to do so.

If Radiohead's new approach will get those results I am already hoping for a better world, happier ears and healthier minds.

Personally I'm just curious about what this will lead to. I'm an optimist. In this case I'll pay that extra buck to drive in the Ferrari.

Time will tell, I guess. One thing I'm sure of: we're entering more interesting times. :-) I'm cheering for music over marketing. I guess the point is that marketing got a bit of competition now, which is good.

True. Which is why labels try and get a large percentage of that these days, I've heard. A new role for the label. About time they realize. Odd how something that revolves around art can be so conservative.

Funny how the the people who are complaining that "consumers" won't take music seriously (as a product) are the ones who watered down music to begin with. I mean, if you shit in your own backyard it's gonna stink in your house sooner or later.

While I mark this as a great leap for artists and their art, I doubt it will be the label-obliterating fire sale that many hope for. The major label music industry is too heavy-handed (and profitable, mind you) to fall completely.

Will this force some semblance of change? I think so. Will it be an industry "reset button?" I doubt it.

It gives me hope too. There are many independent bands that offer their music for free online. I remember that 90's alternative band Harvey Danger made a new album about 2 years ago and they offered it for free online (it was a pretty good album, too). Radiohead may not be the first, but they are the most popular to try it so far.

I hope this is successful for them and that it will stand as an example to other mainstream musicians.

When Harvey Danger released "Little by Little" over their website a couple years ago, I grabbed it, thinking it would be nice to have in my collection. But it quickly became one of my favorite albums. And in connection with what Capt Daydream originally posted, I then paid for it. Yeah, I already had the album, yeah I liked it, but when they came to Philly I put my $10 down and bought the album--the same album I'd already played on my iPod a million times. The girls like 'em short

"I realize the reason I like playing records (as opposed to CDs) is that they're short: they stop after 20 minutes. I want less music."

Brian Eno wrote that in his published diary "A Year With Swollen Appendices" in 1995. A quote I have never forgotten. I guess, another writing of the good ol' "quality over quantity" deal.

PJ Harvey's brand new album "White Chalk" is a fine example of this. First time I put on the LP it was on the wrong speed. It's on 45 RPM 's. Don't think I've seen that before with an album.
Anyways... instant positive reaction! I expected it to be good, but that it might take some getting used to. But no. Especially the title track.

Also, brave of Polly Jean to take on a new instrument, the piano, and the challenge that presented.

Hm, two Eno quotes in one post would be overdoing it, but another one seems to fit...

"If you've been doing a certain type of work for a while, you're familiar with it, you're quite accomplished at it, it's no longer clumsy. But when you start something new it is very clumsy, and it has all sorts of failures built into it; it's ugly, actually, at the beginning. But I've learned to believe, to trust that that's where interesting things come from -- from something that is somewhat cumbersome and unshapely, but strong."

And strong is exactly what "White Chalk" is.

Get's me thinking about another great - and short - album by a fantastic female artist. Nina Nastasia's "Run To Ruin". Also clocks in just over the half hour mark. Ethereal stuff, just like PJ's latest.

Regarding the shorter album phenomena: I also hate the re-released CDs with "bonus tracks" appended to the end of the album. Bowie's "Low" and Frith's "Gravity" come to mind. It's like ending a great nine course meal with a plum tart and Armagnac, then having the waiter show up offering the vegetable course again, but stir fried this time.

I don't know how I feel about the "Low" bonus tracks. The "Sound & Vision" remix is horrible, but the other tracks are good. Don't know if they were available anywhere else. Probably not. Then maybe a bonus disc would be the solution? Anyway, on the more recent 24 bit remastered cds the bonus tracks were gone again.

Another natural angle on the short vinyl album thing would be the dividing into A and B sides.

Scout Niblett: Tour and album

That wonderful Scout Niblett is on the move again. The first single "Dinosaur Egg" is already out and the album, "This Fool Can Die Now", is out on October 15th.

She starts touring the US in October and then crosses the pond to the UK and the rest of Europe. Already got my ticket for the Copenhagen show (at Loppen in Christiana).

Curious about the whole album. The single is great and the new songs at her MySpace suggest a new direction. One foot in her past while taking a bold step onward (and hey, that's gotta be Will Oldham on there too).

Her previous album, "Kidnapped By Neptune", was overall a more grunge-like affair. And an absolutely superb effort. Her best since the debut "Sweet Heart Fever". Her new one sounds like it's not going to disappoint. Yummy. She's the one with the poms poms now.

Two times magic Liz on 7's

Just got myself two very nice 7-inches. Interesting female vocalists and nice arrangements. The 7-inch is a wonderful medium to make one (and the artist?) focus on the qualities of one song.

Liz Green has released "Bad Medicine" with "French Singer" as the b-side. Guitar, voice and double bass. Nice and simple. The sound has the old dusty feeling to it and Liz' voice in that mix recalls some of the old jazz singers of pre-war times. Still, she has that semi-meowing of the voice that one could say is also present at CocoRosie. This is still different, though. Very traditional, yes, but also very strong. Warm, charming and catchy. Both songs are at Liz' Myspace right now. And the 7-inch is still available straight from the label Humble Soul. And as digital download, by the way.

ancy Elizabeth has an album and more than one single out. Haven't checked it all out yet. The single "Hey Son" deserves a recommendation, though. A different approach than Liz Green, but no less mesmerizing. Starting out quiet and then climaxing in a great multi-layered arrangement. The b-side, "Live By The Sea" is more stripped down with voice and floating accordion chords.
The a-side is playing at her MySpace. The b-side has a snippet at Boomkat.

In the age of the digital - LP is king!

I kinda had the feeling. Been buying more and more vinyl - old and new - this last couple of years.

A website called Crave has this little article on the subject.

Yup, there you go. Vinyl sales are up. I guess it will always be around. The cd on the other hand has been overrun by the iPod and its colleagues.

One of my first DJ gigs earlier this year finally convinced me of vinyl's qualities, even though I've been enjoying it for years. I was switching between CDs and LPs when DJ-ing. And the gear wasn't even that brilliant (the turntable, anyway). When playing it was crystal clear. The sound of vinyl had... body. The digital sound... hadn't. Simple as that. Still, I was actually surprised at the big difference. Hadn't expected it. Figured that was something for the fine-tuned ears of really snobby nerds (I can hear them already: "Told you so!"). But no. It was clearly audible. It was physical.

Mind you, I still listen to digital. My discman died a few years ago and I then bought an mp3 player (not an iPod. A Roland Edirol R-09. The one I was waiting for). A nice to have gadget when being out and around (tuning out kids on trains and other people with lack of social skills). But at home and when DJ-ing. Vinyl is the thing. No doubt about it.

So what's your preference - and why?

I prefer my jazz and classical music on vinyl, especially the former. I like the static and noises that sort of graft themselves onto the music giving the whole listening experience the oomph you miss with pristine crystal digital sound. SACD are supposed to be THE standard for classical recordings, I still prefer the few vinyl LP I have back from the 60s and 70s.

For convenience, you can't beat mp3s or other lossy formats... A lot bulky than a turn-table

Can't beat rock, hip-hop and experimental stuff on it either. Especially the latter often only release on vinyl, so it's a given with those. :-)

One thing they note is that vinyl doesn't deal well with sustained high volumes that result when the mastering engineer compresses the hell out of the music. Consequently, the mastering for vinyl is often less compressed and breathes more than something mastered for digital media.

One from the ladies: Enna Bella From Hell'A

Stine Sørensen and Sara Saxild of Under Byen are currently working on setting up a one-day music festival for female artists in Aarhus, Denmark.

Together with Anne Brønsted (singer in Our Broken Garden and The Sad Lovers - the latter along side Sara) and Hanne Tjessem (concert organizer) they will put i it all together using the city's nice, old art cinema Øst For Paradis for the event.

The festival - called Enna Bella From Hell'A - happens on Saturday November 17th.

So far three acts are confirmed: Taxi Taxi!, Wet Dog and Maria Laurette Friis (of Tys Tys) who will do a special show with theremin player Pamelia Kurstin. The rest of the programme is under wraps for now. But it will probably be a very interesting selection of exciting acts.

Yes, four great gals with superb taste in music is putting all this together in one of the nicest places in Aarhus. So, all you need to know is... that you gotta go. If you want to read a bit more before that you can visit:

My friend Emir is putting on a small one-day festival in Aarhus called 'One Man Army' (only for solo acts) in late October. And he thinks I should come and play. Actually he seems to be counting on it. Just one thing...

Oh well, it's ONLY a month or so away. [irony alert!]

What to do with one's weekends? Well, this one went with finally sorting out the video I shot in Berlin back in May. Two great nights of music there.

On May 3rd KURvE and Marzipan Marzipan played a show at the great venue Schokoladen - alongside local Golden Diskó Ship.

The day after SOPA had its first label night. This was at Ausland and the program included KURvE, 9, AnimalLovers and Agata & Me. Marzipan Marzipan joined 9 for a lovely duet, A.K. Hansn joined KURvE for a drunken duet and I was spinning some nice records in-between all the live music.
The whole trip was fantastic. The weather was brilliant, the food and drinks were good and new friends were made in the process.

I never really seem to tire from seeing balkan punk band KURvE perform live. They ARE friends of mine, but they are such a damn good live act. So crazy, so energetic and well, so melodic in their own strange way. One's feet gotta move somehow. And I'm no dancer. :-)

Yeah, KURvE they really rock. And yes, Schokoladen is seriously cozy. Alongside Antje Öklesund probably one of the two nicest venues I've been to in Berlin.

Talent makes all the difference

Artist: Blob Back Fahrenheit



So much music, so little time. I guess I'll write about bits of the recent shows I've attended.

Today I spent a lot of the day doing video recordings of last week's fantastic Blob Back Fahrenheit gig. I put it all on YouTube (the band said okay).

Funny how these kinds of improv bands work. The drummer unfortunately couldn't make the gig, so they had another one onstage. And this is where the talent makes all the difference. Not just technical prowess on the instruments, but the ability to communicate in the now. Not just in tune, but tuned in. They setp up with a vague idea, I suppose, and then let things happen right then and there. So despite bringing on an unrehearsed drummer they put on an amazing show. A show much different than the last one I saw with them. And probably different from the next one they'll do.

With friends like these...

...you can do no wrong.

I was told that the SOPA label night went well. I was there myself, but I guess I'm not cut out to be an organizer (at the moment, anyway). I get to easily stressed out, I think. Felt like it went okay, but I wasn't able to enjoy it to the extent I had hoped.

Keeping a cool head for the rushed soundchecks, setting up the DJ gear (which caused some problems), playing the DJ part and making sure the bar had what it needed (like change for starters!) and everything. All at the same time. What timing. Johan offered to take the bar. No questions. What a relief. And after Emir and Agata finished their great show they took the bar the rest of the night. There really weren't any other people to do it. I didn't manage to gather more for the job. And these two lovely people did not complain.

Still, there were wonderful moments of music that night, despite my head being everywhere else, of course. And people seemed to enjoy it, so I'll lean on their reaction.

Even after many "sorry-sorry-sorry's" I felt I had to buy Emir and Agata dinner at a nice Aarhus café the day after. What a lovely day, it was, actually. Johan will get more thanks later, somehow.

Well, all I wanted to shout out here was: Emir, Agata and Johan, you rule! Beyond the call of duty. So yeah, with friends like these... "grateful" is a word that does not fully cover. The best moments in life is when you experience these things in your fellow man or woman. And then aspire to be inspired by them to do likewise.

I'll write some more about the actual music of this past weekend soon. Probably with some pictures and some video.

I guess one wants to have things work out perfectly. With my head around all these things I don’t think I’d notice if they were perfect. Or close to perfect. :-)

I was working within a framework of other people (lovely too) which made me dependent on others. They acted professional and did eveything they should. I think, I just get confused to easily these days.

I’m just thinking that some years ago I did something similar that felt better somehow and then I was in charge of it all. It’s not a question of not wanting to rely on others actually, but more that better preparation on my part, if possible, would have given me a better experience.

Oh, what the hell am I talking about? Everything is clearer in the rearview mirror and it was a great night. So enough about that. Just had to give credit where it’s due.
The next night I could just relax and enjoy the music, which was great. Blob Back Fahrenheit and Grey Daturas were super. More about that later. ;-)

Homegrown fun

Tomorrow night the very first Danish label night of my label SOPA goes down. In Aarhus. The first one was in Berlin back in May.

A.K. Hansn (of Singvogel) and Nils Gröndahl (of Under Byen) from SOPA will be performing. As will other acts. I'm both excited and... well, y'know, as an organizer things hopefully to go as smooth as possible, so yeah, there's that kind of slightly anxious type of "excited" too.

The F-word in foreign tongues

...means exactly that. In Denmark, anyway. But as English is not our mother tongue it does not carry the same weight as in the US or UK. Yes, try and listen to cursing Danes. We sound like a severely foulmouthed nation. F this and F that, even with small matters.

The film set that resurfaced - and rocked!



Remember the movie "Waterworld"? The one where Kevin Costner plays Mad Max on water. I seem to remember back when it was in production that the floating set was hit by a storm and got destroyed - thus making it the most expensive movie at the time, or something like that.

Well, I think I've found the sets that flew away. They have washed ashore on the harbour in Aarhus, Denmark.

Just kidding. But I really couldn't shake the image when I saw the amazing makeshift contruction of recycled wood that makes up the Rumstativ right now (it translates roughly as "space frame").

Last weekend there was superb. Good vibes and great bands. Saturday saw great performances by Per Hoier, Singvogel and Ear And Dark. A strange mix of brit-style 80's melancholy pop, trashy rock with brass, woodwind and disturbing Danish lyrics, and mathpunk with wonderfully hysterical Pixies-undertones.

The better Sonic Youth from Denmark



So, I'm at this party at a friend's appartment in Berlin back in May of 2006...

And so the story begins.

It was a small flat. One room, a very small hall and a kitchen. But with the greatest "ambiance", if that's the word.

No place is too small for music. And so, indeed several musical acts were invited to play. Even a full rock quartet. Okay, the drummer had to make do with a snaredrum, a cymbal and the bassdrum pedal pumping the snaredrum case. But he was (and is) one of the best drummers around, so that didn't turn out to be a drawback.

They launched into a groovy hook and then evolved into a whirlwind of percussion, feedback noise and over-the-top vocals in their intense, but less than half hour long set.

The had just begun playing when it hit me that, hell, I should turn on the minidisc and mic. Today I'm glad I did. What a gig.

We were just 10 or 15 people in the audience. If that. Which I guess, was all that could fit in the room anyway.
A few from the audience joined in on little things and toys, but the four people on the zero centimeter tall stage commanded my full attention.

The name?

Blob Back Fahrenheit.

The sound was way more out there than some of the old mp3s I remembered hearing online some time earlier. This music was happening, being born, then and there, in the moment. Yeah, I had had a few beers, but the music hit me right in the heart, the head, all senses. A tidalwave of musicality washed over me.

Later I got in touch with them again. Then helped with making a temporary band site (it's still there). I put the live recordings on there. Haven't heard them play live since. They are all involved in so many other bands that it seems that Blob Back Fahrenheit shows are rare occasions. And who are they?

The drummer has performed with folks like David Thomas of Pere Ubu and Norway's amazing (and Sonic Youth-collaborating) saxplayer Mats Gustafsson. The guitarists and bassplayers play in bands like Kirsten Ketsjer The Rock Band, Joy Lieberkind, I Got You On Tape, Murder, Moi Caprice, Frisk Frugt and many more. The singer is performing now and then in the Danish jazz circuit with Jesper Zeuthen and others.

A German reviewer wrote of a previous gig that "Sie sind die besseren Sonic Youth aus Dänemark" - which explains the title of this post. A statement that of course raises expectations somewhat. Still, despite Sonic Youth being "the untouchable indie gods" I am not disagreeing with it.

So why am I writing about them now? Well, they finally got another gig lined up. And I'm going. You should too.

September 8th at the Rumstativ events on Aarhus harbour (Kalkværksvej, Spanien 19C) during the Aarhus Festival Week. They play along Australian band Grey Daturas and LJUD are the organizers.

Spooky shit, good shit

Album: The Fantastic Voyage Of Goblin: The Sweet Sound Of Hell



An album of horror film music that starts with a track called "Mad Puppet's Laughs" - which is exactly that - is off to a good start. Chilling.

Without being much of a horror flick enthusiast I HAVE heard of legend film director Dario Argento. But it is only now that I learn of the band that scored much of his work: Goblin. An Italian "synth-prog" band who in the 70s and 80s provided spooky audio for Argento's visuals.

Cherry Red Records have released a compilation - "The Fantastic Voyage Of Goblin : The Sweet Sound Of Hell" - which according to the resident Goblin expert at Boomkat says is the perfect way to get introduced to the band.

While listening to Goblin will most likely not get me to watch more horror flicks - if any - I am surely thrilled in several ways by the music.

There's no way around the "retro aspect" of this music. But there's this unique mix of big theatrical musical moves and tip-toe eerieness - and folk and funk even! - that really tickles my taste buds. Timelessness and nostalgia.

I've got a soft spot for 70s/80s prog. Ever heard of Edhels? Probably the only group I know of from Monaco. Sounds like a long lost Camel album. Speaking of horror movies, the soundtrack for the upcoming Halloween remake has a track from my absolute favorite unknown singer, Nan Vernon. Someone put up a Nan tribute page on myspace (http://www.myspace.com/69109850). It's not her personal page, though. She tells me she has about two albums worth of new music ("vampiric funktry" she calls it). You can be sure I'm pouncing on that as soon as she releases it.

Dancing about architecture

"Writing about music is like dancing about architecture", is an often used quote. There's a lot of debate about who said it first. Most seem to put their money on Elvis Costello. But that's not really important. Hearing the music itself must be the best way to convey it. Nevertheless, a helluva lot of people still write about music. Including me. And I read it too.

Recently I discovered a series of pocket books called "33 1/3". They take on different "famous" albums. In very different ways, though. So be careful when you buy them. I was delighted to see a book about PJ Harvey's "Rid Of Me". But apparently the book is a story inspired by the lyrics - which just shows the degree of freedom the writers have been given or have taken.

The reason I discovered the series was the book about Beastie Boys' "Paul's Boutique", one of my all time favourites. And it was just as it should be: the story behind the making of the album. The circumstances, the creative processes and so on. It was a tremendously enjoyable read. The band had also contributed a bit.

Right now, I'm reading the one about David Bowie's "Low", which seems to be also taking the right route. The background history, recording process and so forth - with a lot of good insight from the involved people.

My next in the series will be DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing". It's based on an entire interview with the man himself and looks to be interesting too.

The fourth book I got so far is Radiohead's "OK Computer". But it looks like it's just dissecting the dry technical facts of the music - not sheet music style - so I might as well just listen to the cd. But I guess I'll know once I start reading it. I doesn't seem to be much about the creative process as such. A shame.

So be careful when you get these books. Read some user reviews at Amazon or something first.

Suddenly 16 years late

Funny how one can trick oneself from time to time. I was surfing around as usual stumbling upon music. Found something interesting. A new LP. Great style. Punk rock style with a certain extra flavour with percussion and folk instruments.

Then the LP arrived in the mail. To my surprise this apparently newly released LP was from 1991.

Well, you can't hear everything at once, he-he. So better late than never.

The band even turned out to be a side project of a band I already knew - The Ex.

The band in question is Dog Faced Hermans and the album is called "Mental Blocks For All Ages".

I thought I was getting something new and exciting. And of course, to me, I was.

Great that a label picks this up and releases it. Kudos to Mississippi Records.

I believe in sharing my enthusiasm and this site seems to fit that outlook on life. And since music is what I am most enthusiastic about... well, perfect then.

Wondering about that mp3-upload thing. How many people uploading here have the rights to the music they put here? And should they? Can't really figure out the MOG folks' legal chatter completely. Are they just like the peer 2 peer software developers? "Oh, we're just providing the platform. We don't control what people put up here"...?

Oh well, let's start off with one of the best new rappers around: Bleubird. Go visit him at www.bleubird.org . He'll be doing much more touring of Europe soon, so keep your ears to the ground.

i've uploaded some more old festival features and reviews. around here.

found a dvd of michael winterbottom's 2004 near-future flick "code 46" recently. never heard of it before. good one. understated as abel ferrara's "new rose hotel" and with a pace that reminds me of "lost in translation". i've gotten use to movies that explain everything. and i always notice. for once a movie that leaves space for interpretation. also an interesting subject...
how much will genetics play into human interaction - and finding our significant other? and how far would societies go to control populations? well, we're already slidin' out of place now outside the movies.

so eh, ready for the yellow fever?
just like probably every other person on the planet i've "simpsonized" myself. and seen the movie. good one.
and last, but not least... wooow, what a gig last night with japan's fantastic boredoms at the radiohouse in copenhagen. some video on youtube here, here and here. not that good sound, but the energy translates okay.

sopa marriage records low boredoms

uh yeah, second sopa night coming up! september 7th in aarhus. read more at the sopa site.
and with some delay the coming mega sopa compilation seems to be nearing its completion. i'm quite excited!

a whole lot from marriage records spinning here right now. like thanksgiving's "bitches is lord", but also rock band the dead science's "frost giant" (some mesmerizing vocals on that one). a great label.
what else? well, muddy waters' classic "electric mud" and the oddity maher shalal hash baz's "l'autre cap" (trying to get my head around it).
revisited the old tim burton "batman" flicks on dvd. still a treat. and finally had my first viewing of all three godfathers. a mouthful. masterpieces, i dunno. but great, yes.

going to a few gigs next week in copenhagen: low and boredoms. one from each end of the spectrum, one could say. looking forward.

holidays are over. back to work. saved some days for the autumn, though. hopefully being able to cross the border then.

this year's summer festival race is over. roskilde, forma nova and jazzjuice. i wrote articles about the last two. soundvenue has forma nova here, but if you want to read the original unedited version go here on my own site. seems there's a line to what extent the writers are allowed to be subjective. yes, some good editing was done by the staff there, but any mention of forma nova topping roskilde is gone. that they didn't agree on. well, forma nova is a more interesting festival for me. i also explained why. oh well...

roskilde festival the flaming lips

festival season's started. with a mudbath at roskilde. all positive stories from the organizers. of course. just annoying that they choose to completely ignore the bad ones. well spun... uh, done.
well, now it's time for forma nova and elektronisk jazzjuice.

nice shows at roskilde, though. japanese metal from boris, hyper dance hall from anthony b, brazilian dance madness from bonde de role, ethereal rock from grizzly bear, american "balkanness" from beirut and a mighty rhythmic super show by akron/family along with african footprint international. björk did well, but odd to experience an open-minded and progressive artist acting nationalistic. ain't pretty. but the flaming lips were. as always. can't help but like these guys. their whole message in itself is enough. but they got the songs too. "do you realize?" was (and is) stunningly beautiful.
someone on the web made a "wayne coyne is god" pin. a funny thought. an image from the "fearless freaks" dvd comes to mind... god mowing the lawn in shorts and rubber boots. perfect. i wish he was, he-he. my kind of deity. all fun, love and bright colours.

panda bear shit & shine mia doi todd battles specialten

first off: for once, just this once, i must say... believe the hype. the new album by panda bear really is great. an animal collective side project called "person pitch" that echoes some beach boys, but with plenty of other more contemporary elements that makes it less pop, but still being catchy and very adventurous. okay, the vocals are over-the-top reverby, but somehow it works as a whole. listen here.

a bit of a mixed bag spinning these days. in the heavier department we've got shit & shine with their vinyl "ladybird". two sides, one riff, one beat, my oh my. and it really works. limited to 500 copies on red vinyl. listen here - buy there.
something softer... that's mia doi todd's remix album "la ninja: amor and other dreams of manzanita". Lovely stuff. have a listen.
the new "mirrored" album by battles - with the awesome track "atlas" - really delivers. can't help but move around to this one. listen here.

oh, and i gotta mention that the latest edition of the "specialten" dvd mag is out. interviews, music videos, live sessions, short films and visual art. more people should dig this.

'dong' sopa björk dan le sac reactable lucky dragons

so what's up? a few notes... danish natural gas company 'dong' which is sooo good for the planet is apparently just about territorialism (and money?) anyway. they try to stop a building project using solar power and "biomass". so much for the good intentions on the surface. read on in danish here. typical!

been to berlin again. sopa's first label night. all in all four days of immense fun, good music and superb company. next little sopa thing is a rare show by under byen's nils gröndahl at global on may 26th. looking forward to it.
so was i to the new björk album 'volta'. all those great collaborators! but boy am I disappointed. seems she forgot pretty much everything she's good at. awww!
oh, and the latest musical youtube buzz? scroobius pip vs. dan le sac's "thou shalt always kill". buzz, hype, whatever... i like it. looka here.

kurt vonnegut old school billy childish battles

odd... i had just finished kurt vonnegut's latest book on a sunday. tuesday he was dead. god bless you, mr. vonnegut. and thanks for everything!
a new read: "songs in the key of z" (thanks for recommending, ava!)

gone mighty "old school" lately. into some more of the folky bonnie prince billy. then stumbled on roscoe holcomb online - the lp "the high lonesome sound". timeless folky stuff from some mountaineous part of the usa. great.
in berlin recently, another great find: kitchen recordings of wild billy childish playing the blues. finally got me into digging. spent some at norman records. childish' "in blood" album with holly golighty (one chord! one song! one sound!). a nice comp called "my first billy childish album" and a tripple-lp retrospective. sends me back to that childish solo blues gig at gutter island years ago.

and even older: moondog. finally got "rare material", uh yeah. and actually also bryan ferry's 1999 album "as time goes by" with him doing good old ones - really well. and for (more) dancing: belgradeyard soundsystem's "munchies" 7-inch and battles' "atlas" 12-inch. Wow, what the hell?!

the berg sans nipple busdriver kurt vonnegut

the less you say, the less foolish you look in retrospect... hurray for the blogosphere!
oh well, a few recommendations of some treats should be safe enough.

took a while, but now the second album by the berg sans nipple has finally arrived. even on lush double vinyl too. lovely. and might i add: the content does not disappoint the least. lively beats, good tunes and great arrangements. in the way this duo does it best. be sure to check it out. for instance at myspace.
and what can i say? still enjoying busdriver's new "roadkillovercoat" a lot. nice use of drum machine and also less hip-hop-like elements such as dance beats and the meowing vocals of cocorosie.
also: a neat little cover song, "don't stop the dance", by masha qrella is out on 7-inch. others that please now: white magic, amon tobin and the compilation "ghos busters III".

kurt vonnegut's "a man without a country" is now in affordable paperback (and it inspired the name SOPA). a snack-size read physically, but not in content. "we are here on earth to fart around. don't let anyone tell you any different."

so what's been going on? been busy. done a temporary website for the band blob back fahrenheit. check it out here and have a listen to some live recordings there and go to their myspace page.
i also put some pictures online of howe gelb & the voices of praise playing live in berlin last year. have a look.
also done som dj'ing lately. nice feeling to share some exciting sounds with people. still have to get used to do a set that's not too much all over the place, he-he.

so what's pleasing to the ears these days? well, deerhoof's latest "friend opportunity" for sure. once again a superb album. dosh's lp "the lost take" mixes hip-hop with electronica and rock nicely. errors have made a lovely little electronic 7-inch called "saluti france". and busdriver's new "roadkillovercoat" boasts great rap and neat drum machines and such. go dig!

frem & forstærket II bleubird coming music sopa

had a terrific... no, fantastic... time at the frem & forstærket II festival in aarhus last weekend! shot a bunch of photos. check 'em out under 'snapshots'.

in the next issue of denmark's best music magazine geiger i have my first article for that mag. it's an interview with rapper bleubird. his new album is "rip u$a (the birdfleu)" and it's superb. yeah, got a promo.
the article is based on two interviews done in aarhus and berlin. the picture on the right is from a sunny late august day on the roof of lynfabrikken in aarhus. we did a photo session there with jint. check out the "rip snippets" from the new album at myspace.

quite excited about things to come in music right now. speaker bite me are finally releasing a new album. first "teach me tiger" mp3 is great.
plus: states rights records is finally on the move again. with a new (probably killer) comp called "grown zone", a remix album by y.a.c.h.t. and something new by jib kidder.
right now listening to some old lightning hopkins blues on vinyl, ddamage, singvogel, daedelus. and the new sopa releases out now!

computer trouble sopa d.i.y. festivals

my computer is one big troublesome knot at the moment. just want to erase the hardrive and start over. and that i can't even do. computers!

been really DIY-like these days. just about to release the first SOPA cds (nils gröndahl and marzipan marzipan). got the covers etc. from the print company and trying to decorate the discs also. a lot of work. will be exciting to hear how people receive these little gems. already got a few pre-orders, which is cool. check out the video at the label site with a 2007 preview!
and oh joy, marzipan marzipan is coming to denmark later this month. at the frem & forstærket II festival january 26 + 27 in aarhus. going there. also to the balkan festival on 28. made the website for that. but be sure to check the F&FII out!

prime minister - earthling or alien?

remember the theory about the 1969 moonlanding being fake and shot in a studio on earth? seems denmark is experiencing the opposite. during the prime minister's new year's speech yesterday he blew his cover.

for the most of this year it has seemed as if he has been on planet earth, but in fact he has been somewhere else in the universe. it simply can't be that big a selfdeception - or such a bad last attempt at spindoctorin' (he's spending a fortune on these guys!).
well, he says on 2006: denmark handled the muhammad-drawing debacle well. no-no-no, we didn't. we are securing our young people's future with education. well, why are you starving them? and let's improve child- and healthcare. i guess all the people on the barricades this year think his doing exactly that? okay, always good to tear something down and then build it up again. an improvement, yes, technically speaking. if you speaka de danish read on here.

so what is he? an alien visiting every new years? or an arrogant earthling out of touch with reality? hard to tell. let the conspiracies flourish!

dubya jab mica och el xela busdriver

a big blow to dubya. hopefully one of more keeping the whole elephant down for good. eight years in the grip of religious fanaticism - east and west - is more than enough.

so what's spinnin'? lots! the re-release of pavement's "wowee zowee" with all the extras. three electronic danish acts also: band ane with her "anish music", karsten pflum's "idhax" and jab mica och el's "abc hi i'm cola". the latter is out on ache records who also put out konono no.1's "kongotronics". another gem is sole's "live from rome" which i finally got hold of - on double vinyl. the real exciting discovery for me at the moment, though, is rapper busdriver who has two superb albums under his belt: "fear of a black tangent" and "cosmic cleavage". in the quiet, but unsettling corner is xela's "the dead sea". great record with superb artwork. also quiet is goldmund's lovely "corduroy road". also gotta get my hands on the books' album "lost and safe" soon. a critic's favourite for a long time, but i only just recently got around to actually listening to it.

under byen just came back from touring canada, the us and europe and will now go ahead with a string of shows in denmark. dig in, danes!

under byen berlin dense goldmund gondry

lovely reading album and live reviews of under byen these days. they really seem to have knocked people on the other side of the atlantic off their feet. i put a lot of these nice words on the fansite here and here.

just back from a week in london and five days in berlin. hadn't been at camden street market in ten years. great to be back.
in berlin i finally started connecting the geographical dots. and also found a new record shop in the process, which i for some odd reason hadn't been to before. check it out. it's called dense and it's in prenzlauerberg close to the venue ausland where i witnessed a brilliant live show by bleubird while there.
also visited the museum of music instruments in berlin. lots of old stuff from 1500 and forth. but also some cool analogue synth things from the last 50 years or so.

currently enjoying: bonnie 'prince' billy's new album "the letting go", nina nastasia's equally new "on leaving" and goldmund's low-key piano instrumentals on their new 7-inch on type records. was also at the cinema to check out michel gondry's latest "the science of sleep". great!

marzipan marzipan got some nice reviews in geiger. one from the brilliant yoyo oyoy festival and one of her latest demo cd. yep, you can trust the nice folks at geiger to have good taste, he-he.

i am currently trying to start up a little d.i.y. indie label: sound of perpetual astonisment - inspired by a passage in the latest kurt vonnegut book.
just cd-rs containing adventurous sounds wrapped in nice inventive covers. and we're off to a pretty cool start: releases by marzipan marzipan, nils gröndahl (of under byen), a.k. hansn (of singvogel) and delay lama (a.k.a. dennis block, formerly of strumm). neat, huh? and there's at least a handful of more great artists lined up. but i won't tell you who just yet. ;-)

another jazzjuice discovery is spinning: japan's sora with his album "re.sort". cherry blossoms in 8-bit land. nothing is 'lost in translation'. it's clear as a bell. lovely.
other spins: maja ratkje's "voice", pandatone's "lemons & limes", julien neto's "le fumeur de ciel" and miles davis' "the complete bitches brew session" (what a beautiful 4 disc box that is!).

festival features pictures poprevo nathan michel

i wrote an article on the elektronisk jazzjuice festival in aarhus last week. yep, another great one. read it here.

currently listening to nathan michel's "the beast". quirky pop at its best! heard him live at the elektronisk jazzjuice festival in aarhus and was immediately hooked. there are various files for listening here. undoubtedly odd, but still severely catchy and lovely.
other music that rotates here right now: a new single by pet called "whip my blue chip". seems to be one of the dauerfisch guys out on his own. cool song. well, actually mostly the remix on the single.
hadn't noticed that cheval de frise had released a new ep in 2005. rather short, but good. "la lame du mat" it's called.

festival features bolivian taxis

wrote a feature on the forma nova festival for soundvenue magazine - in danish. you can read it here. i will put up some of my own photos from it on this site in the near future.
i've added photos to the festival features now. and put up some new written pieces too.

a small odd fact that i was told a little while ago about bolivian taxis. they're actually scooters or small motorcycles which you sit on the back of as the passenger. and the wild dogs of the city chase you. but then you as the passenger can beat them off with a stick.
the stick costs extra...
that just produced so many images inside my head. amusing in its own totally absurd way.
the world is a weird place. so many differences. it's a small globe. but a big world.
or to quote comedian steve wright in relation to this: "it's a small world, but I wouldn't want to have to paint it."

blob back fahrenheit blogging

added a few gig photos of the great blob back fahrenheit of danish music'n'art collective yoyo oyoy live in berlin alongside marzipan marzipan and ian wadley. I played a bit that night too, my solo live debut actually, but luckily no camera caught me.
i have added a page with my list of my favourite albums. still needs a little work.

stumbled on an amusing picture of george bush (yes, another one of those) the other day with him aggitated and with someone having added the caption "update your fucking blog". whoever they were - they had a point. never did much with mine at blogspot. and now i kinda blog here. hence: it's now deleted and i put the text from it in this site's archive. ahhh, one less thing to have forgotten about probably causing subconscious guilt. like cleaning up. which reminds me... now, where's my vacuum cleaner?

bleubird marzipan marzipan je m'appelle mads

listening to a lot of music these days. the sun is out right now. so not much happening at this site. a nice under byen competition at the fansite, though.

in the occasion of a great new release by canadian rap artist bleubird I stole his nice little advert animation and put it here.
"pilgrim of st. zotique" has seven tracks and is a kind of preview of his coming album. if it's anything like his previous album "sloppy doctor" then we're in for one helluva treat. and judging from this new 12-inch the chances for that are very good. it's out on endemik. buy it at boomkat.

marzipan marzipan visited new jersey-based radio station wfmu and played a nice set there. listen to it here. also a nice interview there.
another thing: i found my summer record of 2006. it's je m'appelle mads & bounty nillers' "jeg fyrer hit efter hit af". yup, a whole album of oddly naughty and extremely catchy hits. check out his site. it's out on jenka music who also put out karsten pflum's album "flugten fra år 2000" earlier. mads and niller are a killer live act too, by the way.

berlin record stores oldboy

a bit slow on the updates. live photos of dat politics and liars are now on the site.
also some 'notes' from my 2004 and 2005 trips to berlin (in danish and english). just been there again so more might show up here soon.

speaking of berlin. too much football down there right now. and too heavy a facelift on the city. but go dig it in the spring. it's lovely. very green.
plenty of good record stores too, of course. among them digalittledeeper (jazz/hiphop/experimental/other) and staalplaat (experimental/elec-tronica/other) in tor strasse and mr. dead & mrs. free (americana/other) right next to nollendorf station. Oh, and good stuff at spacehall (vinyl: hiphop/electronica/other) in the kreuzberg area too.

soooo.... it only took three years for 'oldboy' to reach the danish cinemas. been a big fan of this flick since i saw it the first time. nice to know others will now get the chance to see it too. a superb korean 'whodunnit' thriller. actionpacked and highly original. do yourself a favour and check it out. it was out on dvd before it arrived on the big screens in little denmark. tarantino awarded it in cannes. makes sense.

day by day more the pages on the site are growing with content. some live photos are now online and many more will come. more articles have also been added. soon the ones with photos originally included will be added too. the whole package.

my oh my, marzipan marzipan have got things going on at the moment. shows in both germany, denmark and the usa. happy see that she is the latest addition to the forma nova festival. two more shows around that time in aarhus too it seems.
in late may she'll do a radio show at wfmu in new jersey and a show at barbes in brooklyn, new york. maybe more shows will materialize there too. maybe you can help her?

finally. one of the best performances by the late great bill hicks caught on video (and which has been shared online) is out on dvd. with a bunch of rare goodies too. worth the price alone for his vivid enactment of the possible jimi hendrix-debbie gibson collaboration. "mommiiieee, get that guy with the big d**k away!"
after watching this you are not in doubt: rock'n'roll is not the devil's music. mainstream pop is! yes... lowering the standards of the earth.

dat politics forma nova festival

so this is the new face of larsdideriksen.com. this is how i'll try and do it for a while. not all content is made yet.
space is reserved on this side of the page for rambling semi-blog style.
the other side is for audible pickings from the private orchard or viewable and readable matter. plus side roads to pastures nearby. now, let's get ready to ramble.

the sounds around here are as always a blur of everything.
once again the magnificent ljud guys of aarhus organized a killer gig. frenchies dat politics being the lovely perpetrators. punk/pop/electro style the way they do best. a real buzzin' treat. more pop this time around on their new album. doesn't hurt. it's called "wow twist". listen here.

so what else excites me today? easy answer. the forma nova festival is back! hot on the heels of the roskilde festival. but you won't find a more mellow, musically exciting and cheaper (yes!) festival around these parts. go dig it at the official site or at myspace. plaid is doing a special show this year. and the rest? your new favourite bands!

Ciccone Youth: The Whitey Album (1988)
Kortlivet Sonic Youth sideprojekt, hvor medlemmerne legede med covernumre og inkorporerede trommemaskiner osv. ind i dere trademark støjrock. Har aldrig været så meget inde i bandet, at jeg har kendt til denne udgivelse. Synes dog ellers, at de kan lave helt fantastiske ting - for det meste. Sjovt nok tror jeg lige, at blanding af stilarterne på The Whitey Album er lige noget for mig. Faktisk bedre end det andre sideprojekt Free Kitten, der dog også er interessant. Som Ciccone Youth får de nogle mere bastante rytmer kørende eller dem, der ellers sejler mere rundt på Sonic Youth-pladerne. Me like. :-)

The Visitor

In honour of the occasion of Bush visiting Denmark for a whole 17 hours (wow!) a little link for the Norwegian hip-hop music video banned earlier for saying "Kill him now".

Danish reporters following the arrival of The Leader of the Free World (don't make me laugh!) are jabbering live on tv trying to fill the air with meaningless jibberish while watching him flying by helicopter for 20 minutes - after having arrived with Airforce One (closing Danish airspace for the duration delaying every other flight from Denmark's largest airport).

Danish prime minister looked like a little happy boy. Only missing his shorts and a lollipop.

I'll turn off the tv now before I start letting off steam.

Rice cake, odd taste

A few quotes from Condoleezza Rice's trip to Egypt to start off with...

By the way, how difficult can it be to understand that what Stars & Stripes supposedly stands for is the freedom....TO BURN THE FLAG! It's called freedom of expression, people!!!

Who needs perfection?

Let it stumble in the laboratory!

At the Giant Sand website someone posted a gig review (of a recent Barcelona show) from a Catalan newspaper called El Periódico. It really hit the nail on the head when explaining what frontman Howe Gelb actually does. I'll just cut'n'paste the thing in here:

Howe Gelb, an underground laboratory
None of his concerts will ever be perfect, but nobody will see another one that is exactly the same. Howe Gelb confessed that he needed 20 years to understand that his concerts shouldn’t last more than an hour. And right after saying this, he extended the show to an hour and a half. At the encore he asked the audience to intonate the chorus of Hey Jude while he’d interlace it with Ring Of Fire, but then preferred to play the melody of Over The Rainbow first. He had already said good-bye when somebody asked him to play Napoli. `Good idea´, he agreed. He started at the piano, but in the middle of the song changed plans, ran backstage, took out the acoustic guitar and resumed the interpretation with the new instrument. The man from Arizona goes on the stage with a vague idea of what he wants to do: reinvent his songs (and a few covers) each night. Even without band he’s able to multiply himself thanks to the three microphones and his constant mobility. There are parents who over-protect their children and there are others who force them to learn according to the old method of `let it stumble, it’ll stand up again´. Gelb is of the latter sort. On stage, many of the songs stand the test. But who cares when one fails? He repudiates it and begins another one. His performances aren’t conventional concerts. They’re rather a laboratory open to the public where Gelb, with an unsuspected gift for an entertainer, gives us clues on the mysterious process of musical creation. Clues in an inverse, deconstructive direction which reflect on the limits of the song-format. A lecture on meta-music, maybe somewhat hard to understand for the non-initiated, but absolutely revelatory to his fans.

URDOG - GARDEN OF BONES
Urdog play an instrumental and vocal strain of rock music that stretches far off into the distance on the wide plains of dark American folk music. Repetitive, yet ever changing. Like The Doors reading "Sleepy Hollow" aloud to The For Carnation and then going looking for an ancient druid. Somewhat 'psychedelic'. Only drums, guitar and organ. Beautiful.


2005 - week 10 - march 7 - listening to

SPLEEN UNITED - HEROIN UNLTD.
Air and Dr. Who on a soundbarrier-breaking monorail tour of Moonbase Alpha calmly discussing how to play 'shoegazer' and whether they should invite driver Dave Gahan down for a sip of Jack Daniels and 80s japanese cartoons. What?! I don't know. Just listen! Only two self-released singles so far. But just you wait....

So the doctor really did it

The sad demise of the good doctor... Hunter S. Thompson departed this world looking down the barrel of a gun yesterday.
Did some of the most brilliant writing and created his own Gonzo myth in the process. A myth fuelled by the 60s and 70s and then somewhat out of place today it seemed.
Commiting suicide surely must be for unknown personal reasons and - I hope not - the last desperate act of adding to a myth that had gone too far and executed more or less accidently in a drug haze.
Peaked too long ago and not up for the long climb back?

Anyways, R.I.P. and rock on...

Geez...when one writes as part of one's work blogging in your sparetime might not be the right thing. It's been ages since I wrote in this one. Well, I'll try and change that.

Polish instrumental electronica learning towards the heavier beats of hip-hop, but with twisted synth-figures included for a very uncompromising flavour. Just as it should be. The simplicity works very well in this off-kilter east-European production.

33 tracks woven together on a 80 minute disc. The Anticon label showing with the greatest clarity why people shouldn't be listening to the mainstream hip-hop whoring its way across the MTV screen. Indeed an advancement of the genre. Respect!

Third wonderful DIY ep from this über-productive bedroom rocker from Aarhus, Denmark. Mixing the best from the US lo-fi with ever so slightly trashy yet catchy pop sensibilities that stick to your eardrums like velcro. Expect to hear much more from this guy.

DE LA SOUL - 3 FEET HIGH AND RISING
Dusting of one of the classics. Playful, humourous and funky. Still beats the crap out of most contemporary hip-hop albums. And I still remember every note when I put it on - even though it's was way back in 1989 that I was spinning this all day.

TALKING HEADS - STOP MAKING SENSE
One of the old ones....that never gets old. Make any sense? Well, it shouldn't, right? Bottom line: Many of the great hits in more energic versions. A friggin' brilliant album. And an even better movie. Re-released on dvd...and what a beauty!


2004 - week 50 - december 6 - listening to

I LIKE THIS WIND - THE MAN I LOVE
This week: just one mp3 (passed on to me by a friend) that keeps haunting me. As of yet unreleased, I am told. Having seen I Like This Wind (a.k.a. Rikke Alminde Bendtsen) live a while ago I was impressed. Now listening to this Billie Holiday cover over and over again. Mesmerizing. Very minimalistic Buckley-ish chimey guitar with kitten-soft and slightly hoarse yet spaceous vocals. Can't wait to hear some more when (hopefully) a cd sees the light of day.

PHILIP JECK - 7
Ever evolving vinyl-crackling drone-spheres circling themselves in the static of recorded history. What this man does with his old and worn-out turntables is amazing. Very evocative. Tuning in on the ghosts that live hidden in the deep ripples of the airwaves that surround us.

KNIFEHANDCHOP - HOW I LEFT YOU
No nonsense. Just kick ass. Canadian electronics from the Tigerbeat6 label. This album is a welcome break from intellectualizing everything and all the feely-feely music. Clean-cut genre mix of drum'n'bass, hip-hop, ragga etc.. Your head will bob and your feet move. Go gabba!

THE BLOW - POOR AIM: LOVE SONGS EP
Khaela Maricich singing to the computergame-ish beats of Jona Bechtolt (a.k.a. Y.A.C.H.T.). Simplistic and naive songs straight out of the "indie" underbelly of the United States. Musically fun-loving, but lyrically slightly melancholic. A great 17 minute EP.

BLEUBIRD - SLOPPY DOCTOR
A myriad of styles. Slanted lo-fi lullabies and slick magical excursions into new territory balancing on the edge of the genre we know as hip-hop. Inventive, political and funny in the most welcoming way even though the vocals are confrontational now and then.

On the main subject of the day...

I feel like quoting Bill Hicks - although at the time he was referring to Ronald Reagan.

"How far up your ass does this guy's dick have to be before you realize THAT HE'S FUCKING YOU!!!"

Well, I know almost half of America is on to him, but that doesn't help in a (fooled) democracy. Democracy? If it's based on deliberate attempts to cause widespread fear to keep people from thinking about the real issues it's no friggin' democracy! I don't even dare call Italia that!

It feels like having an obnoxious and stupid kid brother calling all the shots in the house. Never mind the centuries of hard-earned experience that "Old Europe" has. Don't listen to them. They know nothing. The USA don't need no friends. What kind of friends are the ones that only join you because they don't want to be beaten up or because they just use your excuses to cause misery (Russia, China etc.). If the US can attack a nation, kill people all over the place and suspend basic human rights, so can we!

In case it didn't sink in on the way, I was being ironic.

People with good intentions (Bush) don't necessarily do well if they're are arrogant, uninformed and won't listen to their critics. Well, in short: that sort of person is a moron. Good morning, America...

As if a slow crooning Damon Albarn (of Blur) were singing semi-barbershop christmas-like tunes to soothe his jittery laptop computer. Only this is the Birdman - squeezing out music that is catchy as hell in all it's intimate quirkyness.

R.I.P. John Peel

What a sad day. John Peel has passed away.

Who will go in his footsteps? It sure feels like the very last man on the planet with both power AND good taste in music is gone. Those two rarely go hand in hand.

Hopefully some media will take notice from his passing and acknowledge the fact that there are people in the world who care about music and then at least tone down the mindless commercialization of the last tiny piece of proper public service broadcasting that is left.

The terror tool

Terrorism is a very useful tool in an election, it seems. Just keep people scared. Then they don't have time to think straight.

I can't imagine another four years with Bush at the helm. I can't. The havoc he's wreaked on the world - and the civil liberties in his own country - is just too much. It's so Orwellian it hurts. Newsspeak in heavy doses. The greatest country in the world, my eye. He must know that he's undermining the very democracy he claims to protect. Noone's that stupid. And most certainly not his croonies. They know exactly what they're doing.

To boldly go...where Hollywood doesn't

In a time where 99% of Hollywood has neutered itself with censorship, market research and test audiences it's refreshing to see that it actually is possible to go somewhere else for better things. One of these places would most certainly be Asia. In a place like Japan they know that tons of computer graphics does not make a horrorfilm more scary. It's what your mind produces that scares you - not what's on screen.
Still, besides Animé, horror and martial arts films they do make things that are not in these genres overthere. One of these I saw the other day - "Oldboy" - made in South Korea. What a magnificent piece of cinema! Cool style, twisted humour and an inventive plot.
It's about a man who gets kidnapped and is locked in a room for 15 years without getting told why. Once he gets out he of course wants to know why. That's all I'll say about it. Other than: check it out! There are scenes in that film you just wouldn't believe. And a good story too.
It was actually only after seeing the film that I discovered it had won the Grand Prix in Cannes. And yes, with Quentin Tarantino as head of the jury it all makes sense. :-)

So my trip to the little Slagtehal 3 "basement cinema" here in Aarhus the other night was a good one. It was a double feature. Also saw the horror film "A Tale Of Two Sisters" (also from South Korea). It was scary just the way it should be - using the old school horror methods - but somewhat confusing in the way that some David Lynch stuff might twist your head. Ten minutes after the film had ended I think my brain got all the pieces put together so it could rest. I can't say I has managed to do the same with Lynch films, though. :-)

2004 - september 11

Blast from the past....almost

Seems I am on my way back into hip-hop. Being a kid in the 80s there was no way around it back then. Having the characteristics of a "fad" it cooled down again on the world scene - while still being alive underground, of course. Since then it has come back with vengeance in the mainstream. All flashy, sexist and uninventive. A bunch of crap that didn't reignite my initial love for the genre. Not being close to the "source" so to speak (the US) I have not been presented the good stuff for a long time. I've been off somewhere else (rock, electronic music and what-have-ya') and admittedly not kept up-to-date with the hip-hop scene. Well, I think that was the case because all the glitter and total lack of sense of humour of the mainstream (which overshadowed the nitty-gritty and inventive good stuff) was such a turn-off.
I remember when DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing..." came out back in the mid-90s. I thought it was excellent. Checked out a bit more of the music that lay in the border territory between electronic music and hip-hop (Howie B, Urban Tribe, U.N.K.L.E. and uhm...well, DJ Krush is pretty much hip-hop, eh?). But these choices were probably heavily influenced by the long-time love I had for instrumental music (from 70s synth music to contemporary electronics and "post-rock").
A while back I was introduced to some of the more inventive hip-hop from labels like Anticon and Def Jux. Artists such as El-P, Cannibal Ox and Anti Pop Consortium - and was also recommended Sole, Mansbestfriend, Clouddead and Boom Bip. But I haven't really dug into it enough yet.
The other day I got the album "Sloppy Doctor" by Bleubird. And it's bloody brilliant. I feel like I have finally found the gate by which to re-enter the realm of hip-hop. A review of this "electro-ish lo-fi groove thang" said that "Sloppy Doctor" was the "antithesis of mainstream rap". And I feel the same way. The album is encredibly varied and features a wide range of beats, samples and instruments. I can't seem to pry this cd from my stereo. Not that I would want to in the near future. Finally I seem to have taken the step I've been wanting to for such a long time.

2004 - september 2

A decade late - but not too late

This year I discovered the comedy and social commentary of Bill Hicks. I liked his work immediately. The video footage and sound clips I found were from the late 80s and early 90s. I was straight away interested in how he would react to the current state of the world.
When I found his website I was sad to find out that he had died ten years ago - in 1994. No more great material from this original and challenging comedian. Still, I went on a quest to find more of his work. So far I have done this online through peer to peer services. I hope to buy some of it later if I can find it.
Apparently he was mostly "underground" in the US, but did do some shows in Europe (the UK). I have never heard of him in Denmark. Only through the internet was I made aware of him.
His shows might be over a decade old, but it is the subject matter is still valid. The corporate music industry, christian fundamentalism (in the white house and in general), the war on drugs, the dumbing down of the media and so forth. I guess some things never change. Sadly.
Bottom line: he was damn funny and dared to say what most people didn't - and still don't. His twisted perspective on this world was - and still is - refreshing.

My very own zone - lovely headspace

I simply gotta share my enthusiasm for this compilation called "Own Zone". I bought it when Lucky Dragons, Y.A.C.H.T., Bobby Birdman and others performed here in Aarhus a little while ago. Besides being a brilliant gig I was totally amazed by the cd once I heard it. Get this: 24 tracks in 77 minutes.....and they all good! I mean, more or less. Well, no....all good! :-D That's rare.

It's a collection of mostly small simplistic electronic tunes, quirky pop, a few lo-fi dude-and-a-guitar thingies, a long ambient tune and yes, bits and pieces I wouldn't wanna try to explain. Some of the tracks are already on other releases, but many of them are exclusive jams and remixes (that add new exciting touches to songs I suspect are already pretty cool). All the 24 tracks are faded into each other nicely. 77 minutes straight in one mouthful. Yummy! I have never experienced so many great tracks on one compilation cd.

It's released by States Rights Records and the best part: you can pay by Paypal and it only costs 3 (yes, three!) friggin' dollars!!!

I suspect I'll write a bit more on Bobby Birdman and Y.A.C.H.T. soon as some of their cds are on the way to Aarhus. But hey, there are plenty of mp3s you can munch on (Bobby Birdman and Y.A.C.H.T.). So go ahead and listen for yourself!

Computers...

Finally back online. I mean, what's the deal? Just bought new motherboard, RAM and processor, and when I finally got it all put together there was a fault in the motherboard, so I had to take it all apart and get a new one. Jeez! I'm not nerdy enough for all this tech stuff. It just has to work.

And then there's all the people singing the praise of Macs as if nothing ever goes wrong with them. That ain't true! Personally I don't like a computer that doesn't give me a chance to shut it down once it freezes. Oh well...

The damn computer is back in order (knock on wood). Tonight's gig with Under Byen here in the Aarhus Festival Week (www.aarhusfestuge.dk) should put a wide smile on my face, I suspect. :-D Their slot is from 23.00 to 0.30 which would make for a somewhat longer show that usual. I wonder which songs they'll play. Their gigs on hometurf seem to differ a bit from the ones on tour. They sometimes try out new material.
